5g Technology, Opportunities And Challenges

Perhaps with most innovations in technology, generally, they are always faced with challenges, which could be mild. But there could be neck-breaking challenges for the success of certain innovations if they tend to cause dissensus. Dissensus in technology innovation mainly borders on populace interest, government policies, purchase/installation cost, usage, and conspiracists. Little wonder, with milestone accomplishments in technology, there are always recurring problems which are but not limited to the aforementioned dissensus. Hence, with all the apparent advantages of the new 5G technology, it will never be manna from heaven. The goals of 5Gs are inexhaustible, ranging from enhanced: aviation, smart health, self-driving cars, communication, and faster news dissemination to other spheres of human lives. The challenges of 5G on a subtle view are exposures of humans or wildlife to lethal radiation, as opined by the conspiracists. However, the bulk of challenges as to the success of the 5Gs border on their cost of installation, government and network providers' policies, and consumers' purses. 

5G Technology: With the daily increase in the number of internet users from the last decades to the present technology of 3G and 4G, there is a need to meet users' demands. Hence, the adoption of 5G technology, called the 5th generation technology, is inevitable.

Since the 1980s, when the radio technology and cellular system were incorporated, the evolution of digital wireless communication has broadened, ranging from the development of 1G(First generation) in the 1980s, 2G(Second generation) in the 1990s, 3G(Third generation) in 2000s, 4G (Fourth generation) in 2010s to the present 5G technology, the advancement towards smarter technology has taken place. 5G network is a field of innovation necessary for enabling smarter societies. The 5G technology is built on existing infrastructures and can also be standalone, all in an effort to improve the bandwidth, capacity, and reliability of wireless broadband services. The operating range of 5G lies in the millimeter bands of 24GHz to 86GHz and latency of less than 5milliseconds(Ms).

Ever since the rollout of 5G technology, there have been diverse objections and supports from different parts of the world. With the advent of 5G, many individuals assumed it would greatly impact information technology by improving end-user experience, new business models, new business services with very high gigabyte speed, and new applications.

However, it is very expedient of us to know that these opportunities will not come with some challenges since it is new and very few devices are available for 5G services. The cost of implementing the technology is a big consideration, among other factors.

The 5th generation technology is known for its newness in this computer age; the cost of implementing this technology is a great challenge. However, it would be cost-effective if they were mounted on existing communication towers, but this is not an effective way out in rural areas where there are no communication towers. That being said, if at all there are existing infrastructures in more than 95% of the entire country, a huge amount of money is needed for the procurement of other components like the optical fiber cables (since it plays a vital role in delivering increased data capacity), smart antennae, etc. As such, network operators face high implementation costs, which they are not also expected to pass along those prices to their end-users.

More so is the government policy. It could be argued that the Australian government had not done well by ordering Huawei and ZTE to stop the roll-out of the 5Gs. But they did have a good reason that they would not betray the Chinese government regarding national security at the time of taking sides. Besides, a lot needs to be settled between the government and network providers in any country that welcomes the new innovation regarding the policies and infrastructures decision and costs for the sake of the populace. Nobody would love an income-drainer basic of technology.

In addition, is the problem of the increasing digital divide. This had been previously stated but needs emphasis. The issue of an increase in the digital divide is also another big challenge in 5G technology. The rural and suburban areas are less likely to enjoy 5G investment, potentially widening the digital divide. It is worth noting that as of January 2020, 4G adoption in Nigeria was only 12.2% of total connections, mainly contributed by the urban areas. Also, the rural and sub-urban areas are greatly affected by the low speed of data due to poor network connections. For these reasons, solutions must be put in place to bridge the digital divide gap.

Conclusively, at a simple overview, one must clarify whatever doubts or miss giving anyone might have about the 5Gs. The concept that Covid19 and many human health and wildlife endangering issues are mitigations arising from 5Gs should be debunked rightly. As regards the aforementioned, people should first listen to the statements of the governments and official institutions. However, one might still not be really contented with what the government might say. But it does more evil for one to believe everything seen on social media. Hence, there is a need to check content accuracy and also try to understand its purpose. And, of course, social media is majorly a hub where conspiracy theory thrives.

The radio wave used for mobile phone networks is non-ionizing, which means it lacks sufficient energy to break apart DNA and cause cellular damage, says David Robert Grimes, Physicist and cancer researcher. Also, in 2014 the World Health Organization (WHO) said that 'no adverse health effects have been established as being caused by mobile phone use.'

This being said, Nigeria and other countries should hasten up, like several other countries, to embark on their own rollout of the 5Gs. She should not be left behind in taking her turn to witness the new dawn in network technology.
