Bondage Of Volition

Man claims freedom from all, but everywhere he goes in chains. A beautiful piece on understanding how human wills work.

Slavery, too many, would be a form of incarceration by other forces (human or divine), subjecting the ruled to their demands and directives. Few of us have seen this common field of human enslavement. I welcome you to read with me. During the fourteenth century, Raynald III was a duke in what is now Belgium. As the result of a violent quarrel, Raynald's younger brother Edward successfully revolted against him. When Edward captured Raynald, he built a room around him featuring windows and a door and promised him that the day he left the room, all that he was entitled to would be returned to him.

Any problem with that? Let's read further, Raynald was grossly overweight, and he couldn't get himself out of the room. You thought Raynald would need to lose weight before he could leave the room? Thought as much also. Whenever anyone accused Duke Edward of treating Raynald cruelly, his usual words are: "My brother is not a prisoner. He may leave when he so wills." Edward knew his older brother could not control his appetite; he kept sending him delicious food every day. As you may imagine, Raynald grew fatter as day dawned and flew. Raynald stayed in that room for ten years, unreleased until after Edward died in battle. By then, his health has deteriorated. He died within a year.

Thoughtfully, man could claim to be free from all and every influence around him, which is nothing far from the truth. We are all prisoners of our volition. The volition of which is nothing without forces (repressed influence). As Friedrich Nietzsche says, "Man claims to be free from everyone, yet he is with a chain to another everywhere." Unfortunately, mostly to self.
