Child Trafficking, The Menace

This piece highlights the spate of child trafficking and how possible it could be curbed to ensure the average Nigerian child lives a better life.

Child trafficking ranks among the most prevailing transnational crimes in Nigeria and Africa at large. In summary, despite the lack of contextual definition for this increasing vice, Child trafficking is often cast in the mold of ambient, seeming to replace the slave trade with an objective of making a profit. I must hasten to add the rider that it is the exploitation of girls and boys primarily for forced labor and sexual exploitation. Over time the number of child trafficking cases has drastically increased due to the economic circumstances which forced the so-called "child traffickers" to delve into this menace. It all plays down to the selfish interest of the aforementioned individuals.

In the western world, in which Nigeria is an inhabitant, these children (boys and girls) are being subjected to violence as they tend to acclimatize to the unpleasant environment they find themselves in, and increasingly play to the tunes of their newly-found habitat; this stimulates the children into developing traits of inhuman behavior in the long run. Moreso, exploitation, and abuse are a scathed part of child trafficking in which the children become prey to their predators and are subjected to abuse one way or the other, either physically or psychologically.

In the case of a female child rather than a teenager, she is mainly recruited for the purpose of abuse which later escalates to being forcefully given out to an aged yet a petit man who takes advantage of the situation in victimizing further those types of girls. The poser here is, "Are they not too young to be given out ?" I put it to you that child traffickers have no conscience of their own, that even a month-old baby could be subjected to a series of maltreatments. Also, the females are somewhat useful for profit-making in the aspect of prostitution where the child trafficker is seen as the "godfather or mother" who assigns young girls to aged men, making them the sole providers, and whatever becomes of them would be their fate, they might not see alms begging a lucrative work to deploy the innocent ones that are definitely the 'leaders of tomorrow.'

Of a truth, it is glaring that as time goes on, the issue is becoming deteriorating, and nobody seems to be in the quest to bring the perpetrators to book, though some have been apprehended in the course of the years, but with unrepentant minds. An average teenager being exploited ends up being suffered to serve as an armed recruitment mechanism as they can be implants of ammunition expected of such to convey to wherever it is needed, of course, with directives from the "Boss." In eradicating this cankerworm, there would be a need to implement and enforce laws against trafficking crimes which includes bringing perpetrators to face the full wrath of the law. A methodology that serves as a deterrent to others hoping to venture into such devilish acts.

Furthermore, improving access to quality healthcare, social welfare, and criminal support services for children survivors of trafficking to enable the victimized children to live a better life and forget the traumas they must have been made to go through and in the twinkle of an eye be on their way to success. Through this means, the government could inspire them to soar Olympian heights and, yes, that of a towering Gulliver. Concurrently, working with other governments and businesses to prevent, intercept and address trafficking is very important. Prosecuting criminal networks which transcend national borders, in turn, reduces the rate at which the children are being moved to habitats where they are subjected and exploited.

In conclusion, the aforementioned strategies can't stand alone; they need to intertwine with efforts to prevent trafficking, in particular, raising awareness and empowering children with knowledge and skills to recognize and protect themselves from the shackles of child traffickers. Hopefully so, with these measures in full mode, child trafficking will be nipped in the bud without hassles.
