The Choice (chapter 14)

Sarah opened the sachet of the one-step pregnancy test strip in her hand. She quickly ran her eyes over the instruction on the package for the last time.

She cast a glance at the urine she had collected in a small cup. Sarah dipped the strip into the urine as instructed and dropped it carefully on the table. She began to pace the room. The instructions on the strip package had included waiting for two minutes before reading the result. Sarah paced, rubbing her palms against each other and hoping the result would be what she needed—a positive pregnancy test result. She walked back to the strip. A tiny red line had appeared on it. She compared it with the pictures on the strip sachet.

To the pictures, her result was negative. A single red line didn't indicate a positive test result.

Sarah blinked. Maybe she hadn't waited enough. She paced the room again for another couple of minutes. The strip was as she had left it. Perhaps the strip was bad. Sarah took a fresh sachet of the test strip. She repeated the process. The result was exactly the same. Sarah clunked onto the floor and covered her face. "Oh no! God!" She wept. Sarah's phone rang. She stood reluctantly on the fourth ring and wiped tears off her face. She walked to the bedside cabinet to pick up the phone. After swiping the screen, she lifted the phone to her ear. "Hello," Sarah said, her countenance gloomy.

"Hello, dear. How are you?" Femi said from the other end of the line, his voice pulsating with energy. "I'm fine." Femi noticed Sarah's emotion in her voice. "What's wrong with you? Your voice is—" "I'm okay," Sarah said, interrupting. "I know when you are. So, talk to me. What's on your mind?" "I've done the pregnancy test we talked about," Sarah said and hushed, waiting for prompting from Femi. Femi's ears flared. He listened with rapt attention. This was the news he had waited for. "Okay, how was it? I hope you found it easy. And what was the result?" "ErUh." Sarah cleared her throat. "The result was negative. Nothing yet." Femi paused. He knew what Sarah was talking about. It was the test he had encouraged her to carry out that she was updating him about.

Sarah waited for Femi's reaction, hoping he wouldn't get angry or think anything negative about her. "Don't worry, dear. I guess we just have to double up our efforts. We will keep trying until we have what we want. That's not a problem at all," Femi said. Sarah's eyes widened. "What? Try what again? Did you not agree to only a single attempt?" she said, distaste in her voice. "Yes, I did. But since the single attempt refused to deliver, what would you have me do? The current situation is still not different. "from the status quo. Until something happens, we will keep trying. In fact, more frequently," Femi said. Sarah lost her voice. What would she say? She had succumbed to his bidding once. Femi had a say now. She had to either accept his terms or face the consequences. She didn't have much willpower any longer. "I'm sorry, I have to go now. I just dropped in to check how you're faring. I'll drop by your place on Friday," Femi said. "Alright. Take care," Sarah said and hung up.
