Femi scooped rice into a food flask. He took a spoon from the plate rack and dished some stew into a smaller container.
Mama Faronbi stepped into the kitchen to boil some water to prepare her grandchild's food. "You are still here? I thought you left already," she said. Femi placed a lid on the food flask and secured it. "I'm about to leave. I want to take her meal along." "That's good. I hope she is better than she was yesterday. Her face was still a bit swollen when I saw her yesterday," Mama Faronbi said. Femi smiled. "She's coming home today. Latest, in the evening." "Thank God. I want to boil some water and prepare Fatele's food. He has finished the one I made earlier, and there's no hot water in the flask." "Okay.
Thanks for your support, Maami." Femi stepped closer and gave his mum a side embrace. He sincerely appreciated her. Mama Faronbi had been taking care of the house and the baby since Sarah was on admission to the hospital. And she'd been tremendously helpful. She had prepared nice meals and made Femi eat and take some to his wife in the hospital. And it didn't stop at that. She had also done other things Femi didn't expect. Femi was delighted his mother's attitude towards Sarah had taken a new shape. Mama Faronbi smiled. "You're welcome, my dear. I'm only doing what I should. I'm happy my daughter is coming home today. She'd at least be able to nurse her baby better." "She's anticipating that as well," Femi said. "That reminds me. Femi, I have something to tell you."
"Really? I'm listening, Maami." Mama Faronbi cleared her throat. "Er, hmm. You remember what I told you?" Femi raised his brow. "Told me? You told me many things. Which of them?" Mama Faronbi hesitated. She cleared her throat before opening her mouth to speak. "About me having wanted to punish Sarah." "Okay. What about it?" Femi said. "It has to stay between us. You can't tell your wife about it, you know?" Femi grinned. "Maami, I'm not a kid. Why will I tell her about it? Of course, it stays between us. I only hope you'll treat her better when she returns home. I don't want any awkward moments. I'm happy with how you acted during your visits to the hospital. Let it continue. Please, Maami." Mama Faronbi nodded. "I have heard you. You should also tell your wife to be obedient and respectful to me. I'm her mother-in-law, her mother, and a grandmother to her child." "Hmm, Maami. Plenty of titles." Femi laughed. "She will. Don't worry. Sarah is a good woman." "Now hurry and go to her before the food gets cold," Mama Faronbi said and neared the cooker. She lifted the kettle on the cooker. "Okay, ma. We'll both see you in the evening."
"Okay, my son. Take care. Extend my greetings and that of Fatele to Sarah." Femi stopped and turned to his mum. "Maami, is there a way you can adapt to calling your grandchild Joseph? I don't like the Fatele you call him. Our home is not where any god can come" "You've started again, Femi. I won't stop you from calling him whatever you like. As for me, he is Fatele." Mama Faronbi turned the faucet and filled the kettle in her hand with water. Femi watched his mother. He shook his head and stepped out of the kitchen. "I'm gone," he said aloud. "Bye." Mama Faronbi placed the kettle on the cooker. She turned on the gas. She took the flask she had dropped on the kitchen counter and walked to the sink to wash it.
