Dealing With Procrastination As A Writer

Procrastination is something we all engage in knowingly and unknowingly. Unfortunately for writers, it's something that we cannot escape.

Ever since I started my 9-5 job, my writing has been inconsistent. I would tell myself, "Toyin, you have to write today. You must write today," But when I get home, remove my wig, sit on my bed and sight my blue laptop in my room, I say to myself, "E go be. We try again tomorrow."

Β I'm not the only person that feels this way. Before I got my job, I had come up with a strategy to write in the mornings, but unfortunately, that doesn't work because my new job requires me to resume early in the morning. When I return from work, I have to push myself to write. It often ends in a disaster. I review what I write, and it seems like something that a baby would write.

Procrastination, we all engage in it. No pressure, no judgment. I found out what works for me. I am an early sleeper, so I get to bed by 8 pm, which gives me time to relax. After about five hours of sleep, I wake by 2 am and have a writing streak for an hour, then I go back to bed.

Believe me, I hate writing at night, but I have a target to meet. Five hundred words won't write itself. I started writing by 2 am because I figured that I had to meet my word count each day. Do I wake up every day by 2M happy? No. Sometimes, I mutter out an expletive and quibble, but I still do it. Because I owe myself that progress, find out what works for you, people. Remember, a single word is progress in writing. Progress is different for everyone.
