How To Effectively Manage Your Time

Yo! It's another time for us to add to the bank of what we already know! Enjoy and learn!

INTRODUCTION

I believe the term Time Management is not foreign to you. It's a very common term. It is a major challenge that most, if not all humans are faced with. Time Management is important because the outcome of our lives is directly proportional to how we invest our time. I use the term "invest" because I believe our time should be "invested" and not "used". If you want to live a soft life, you must learn to invest your time properly. Before we delve deeper into the subject matter, I'll like to give a brief definition of what time management is. Time Management, in simple terms means the proper use of your time. However, this article is not just about time management but "effective" time management.

EFFECTIVE TIME MANAGEMENT

Effective time management is a method of proper time investment that is guaranteed to yield profitable results. Yes, you shouldn't just look out for results. It has to be positively profitable results. Something that will take you from the level you are to the level that is one step closer to the life you have envisioned for yourself. Now, on to the big question...

HOW CAN YOU MANAGE YOUR TIME EFFECTIVELY?

1. KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU WANT TO ACHIEVE PER TIME:

Before you set out to do anything each day, ask yourself what you hope to achieve. This is where keeping to-do lists come in. Some persons make to-do lists the day before or the weekend preceding a new week. I don't keep to-do lists every day. I enter each day with specific things that I want to achieve. For example, my tasks may be, writing and editing two articles, reading 30 pages of a self-help book, wash bedding. These tasks may not be written down but my brain is already ringing with them and I make moves to accomplish them. I write down my tasks in to-do lists when the tasks I have to accomplish are a little complex or they're weekly, monthly, or even yearly goals. Whatever the case may be for you, be specific on what you want to do per time. Don't be vague.

2. LEARN HOW TO PRIORITIZE:

What does it mean to prioritize? Prioritizing has to do with giving first place to the important things. That is, doing the most important things first. In the book Eat Your Frog by Brian Tracy, Mr. Tracy explained that getting difficult tasks out of the way will give you a boost to get to work with the less difficult tasks. But, if it so happens that your most important task is not a difficult one, still start with it. Do the important tasks first and continue later with the less important ones.

3. SET A TIMELINE:

Work within a time frame. When do you want to finish? How long should what you're doing take Doing this will help you to reduce lagging behind or just lazing around after every little work.

4. DON'T SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON LEISURE:

There's a song I like, I don't know if you've heard it too. It goes, "problem e no dey finish, make you try dey enjoy o..." Where is the lie? The truth is as long as you live there will always be one problem or the other, so, it'll be wise for you to have fun whenever you can. In fact, create time to relax and have fun. But, don't spend all your time having fun. Engage in activities that will help you grow. (I wrote an article on Steps To Developing Yourself. You can check it out.)

5. PLANNING:

There's a saying that goes, "He that fails to plan has planned to fail." Lack of planning is the beginning of failure. Don't rush into things haphazardly. Think, think, plan, think.

6. LEARN SELF-DISCIPLINE:

Discipline seems like a simple word, but it's a trait many find difficult to adopt. Behind every true lasting success is discipline. Doing the needful. Doing what is required whether you feel like it or not.

7. LEARN TO TAKE BREAKS IN BETWEEN YOUR TASKS:

Like they say, "Body no be firewood." Learn to take breaks as you work so that you don't burn out. Taking breaks also helps to improve your efficiency level. Make it a habit to refresh yourself in between your tasks.

8. START NOW!

Even if I were to give 100 steps on effective time management it'll profit you nothing if you don't start to put them to work. So, get up, chin up and get to work now!
