How To Set Achievable Goals

Set goals and achieve them! In this short article, I'm going to show you a simple step-by-step format on how to set SMART goals.

The word ‘goal’ is pretty common in our day-to-day life. Company executives use it; students use it; career men and women use it; entrepreneurs also use it. But for the purpose of clarity, I’ll give a short definition of what a goal is. According to the 8th edition of the Oxford Advanced Learners’ Dictionary, a goal is something that you hope to achieve. I’ll say goal setting is the process of outlining and planning toward actualizing your aims or goals.

We all have goals that we want to achieve in different areas of our lives; heights we want to scale in life; grades we want to get at school; positions we want to attain in our careers, but proper planning and action have to be in place for any of these to be attained. It is important that you plan and also start working on your plans. Planning and sitting back to relax will bring about frustration. Proper planning+ immediate action= productive results

TIPS ON SETTING GOALS

1. Write down your goals: A goal that must be achieved has to be written down. Putting your goals down on paper makes it real. If you prefer to write on your phone notepad, do so but by all means, put your goals down in writing. When it’s just in your head, it’s nothing but mere fantasy. Writing your goal gives you a little push.

2. Outline the challenges that are to be expected and write out your fears concerning that particular goal: When you write out your expected challenges, it helps you to prepare ahead. Of course, we simply cannot avoid some challenges, but being aware of them gives you a sort of leverage because you won’t be caught unawares.

Sometimes, we have things we’ll like to do, but the feeling of fear stands as a wall blocking us out. Fear can make a little molehill look like a very big mountain. You can’t be too sure that you’ll perform badly at something when you haven’t even taken a step. It’s better for you not to do well at something than for you to live a life of regret. You may even discover eventually that your fears were baseless. Write out those fears and refuse to let them stop you. Mark Twain said, ‘Courage is resistance to fear, mastery of fear, not absence of fear.’

3. Be realistic in setting your goals: Nothing is indeed unachievable if you put your mind to it, but some goals are plain ridiculous. It will be unreasonable for a student with no income source to say his goal is to purchase a brand new car in two months. When you are unrealistic in goal setting, you may become frustrated when you end up not achieving it.

4. Set deadlines: You must create time limits for your goals to avoid time wastage. Some goals can be short-term or long-term. It is important that you allot time to your goals and discipline yourself to achieve them within that given time. The time frame differs for each individual goal. Some may take five years, three months, a day, etc. Setting deadlines for your goals will enable you to measure your success rate and see how much you’ve progressed. Knowing how much you’ve progressed fills you with a sense of accomplishment which motivates you to work harder.

5. Set value-adding goals: Ensure that your goals are value-adding. Set goals that will impact you and others around you positively.

6. Take it one step at a time: Attend to each goal one after the other. Don’t go about it haphazardly, or you will end up wasting time and achieving nothing.

7. Don’t wait too long to start working on your goals: Get to it! Writing out your goals, setting deadlines, and so on is good, but more important is getting to work on your goals.

Take action!

Get to work!
