Isaiah 45:11: What It Really Says

This article offers an explanation for a scriptural text often misquoted and misapplied by a vast majority of believers. In this teaching, you will learn what Isaiah 45:11 truly means and how to correctly apply it to your life.

“Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons, and concerning the work of my hand's COMMAND YE ME.” - ISAIAH 45:11 Over the years, I have quoted this text and tried to apply it in my personal life. It never occurred to me to pause and really study it. I was comfortable with the explanations given by other Bible teachers, most of whom were (are) highly ranked and sincere men and women of God in the Church. Though I sometimes felt uncomfortable with the teachings given with reference to this text, I made no effort to study it for myself. I see the same thing among believers today. Only a few believers actually make efforts to study the Bible for themselves.

You need to understand that there’s an invaluable gain in knowing the Word of God for yourself. Thank God for the wonderful and sincere Bible teachers we have today. Nevertheless, I still believe it is important for the believer to study and know the scriptures for himself. Use every help and guide you can find as provided by God, but make conscious and intentional efforts to study and know the Bible for yourself. You see, just anybody can twist and interpret the Bible to say something it was never meant to say. And please don’t get me wrong. This is not a question of whether the person is sincere or not.

I believe that majority of the wrong teachings in the Church today were propagated by sincere believers and ministers who really didn’t mean any harm. But the fact remains that a person could be thoroughly sincere while still, at the same time, sincerely wrong. Even in our secular education system, our teachers and professors encourage us to conduct further studies and research on our own.

Why, then, are most believers not making further inquiries about the truth of the scriptures? Why are most precious saints not asking relevant questions? Why are most believers not taking advantage of the ministry of the Holy Spirit and the power of their minds to unravel scriptural mysteries? So, one day, I needed to really study Isaiah 45:11 to find out what it actually says. And brothers and sisters, what I found scared me.

How could I have lived in ignorance all these years? I had applied this scripture to prayer, thinking that God, through this scripture, had given me the license and authority to command and make Him do what He would never normally do unless I commanded Him. How ignorant, stupid, insolent, arrogant, and disrespectful I had been. I thought God wanted me to ‘command’ Him. How wrong I was. Poor me!

But while I studied this text in the old King James Version, I noticed there was something wrong. The thought flow was suddenly distorted. I thought, how could God suddenly say, “Woe unto him that striveth with his Maker! Let the potsherd strive with the potsherds of the earth. Shall the clay say to him that fashioneth it, What makest thou? Or thy work, He hath no hands? Woe unto him that saith unto his father, What begettest thou? Or to the woman, what hast thou brought forth?”

Only to continue in the next verse, “Thus saith the LORD, the Holy One of Israel, and his Maker, Ask me of things to come concerning my sons and the work of my hand's command ye me.” Then, back again to “I have made the earth and created man upon it: I, even my hands, have stretched out the heavens, and all their host have I commanded”?

There was definitely something wrong with the thought flow. So, I had to investigate this thing in other translations while, at the same time, keeping my heart open to the instruction of the Holy Spirit. After consulting other translations, I discovered a day and night difference between the rendering of the old King James Version and the other translations I consulted. So, this is definitely a translator’s error. By this, I am not saying that the old King James Version of the Bible is wrong.

I think the problem is with the language usage of the translators. They didn’t probably read the text the same way those of us in this century read it. The English Language has undergone so many modifications and improvements that the average person today rarely understands the language of King James Bible translators. Also, a majority of the translators were not even believers, or Holy Ghost filled themselves. They were professors of Language and historians gathered together to translate the Bible text into the English Language. They did an excellent job, however, with a few errors. That’s why sometimes, it is good to employ other translations in your studies.

So, what did I find? I found that Isaiah 45:11 was a continuation of the previous verses.

The portion actually reads, “This is what the LORD, the Creator and Holy One of Israel, says: "Do you question what I do? Do you give me orders about the work of my hands?” (NLT) You can also check other translations to be sure. Then, right after this, the Lord continued, “I am the one who made the earth and created people to live on it. With my hands, I stretched out the heavens. All the millions of stars are at my command.” So, this settled and cleared the confusion.

Does this make sense? Do you think I am wrong? Let me know your take on this in the comment section. And if there are other translators or punctuation error(s) you have also noticed in the old King James Version, please do well to point them out; Let's all learn together.
