Lasting Solemn Days (chapter Five)

"What do you mean to run away," Bewa asked surprised at what Abena said.

"To where?"I have been meaning to say this," Abena said, opening the small cupboard beside the bed and under the books inside; she brought out a crumpled paper and gave it to Bewa."What is this," Bewa asked. "When mummy left, she gave this to me to keep no matter what happened and that if things got hard as I grew, I should call this number. "Have you tried it before? How sure are you this is going to work?" Bewa asked, concerned Abena was still hanging on to something from the past years.

"I think we should....." "Oh my god, I left something on fire, and it is probably burning by now," Bewa said suddenly and quickly came down from the bed to leave the room. "I'll come back later." Fade came back that evening, and without waiting to do much, she left hurriedly. Bewa wondered what was happening. It was noisier than usual the next morning with children crying, mothers scolding or fighting, and the loud scream of people whom Bewa pointed out might be either creditor who came to meet their debtors in the house or loud hawkers who made sure everyone in the house heard the advertising of their goods from the entrance wherever they stood.

Bewa was done with the pastries as usual while Abena packed them into the big plastic container. As soon as they were done, they left the house for school. On the way, Abena was still going to bring up the topic she talked about the previous day. "This is her daughter." Bewa and Abena heard someone say as they walked and pointed in their direction, but they ignored it. Within a twinkle of an eye, three women appeared in front of them as they stopped. Bewa was still wondering what was going on when the first woman in a black gown and a red wrapper with touches of gold tied around her waist opened her mouth to talk, and the first thing Abena noticed was her teeth, which the white part struggled to outshine the black patches. She wanted to laugh.

"Where your mama," She asked, frowning, obviously not ready to hear a foul reply. But it was coming for her. "She has not come home since yesterday," Bewa replied, hoping something had not gone wrong. "She gives you money," another woman cut in, asking her immediately. "No, she did not give........" Eehhh, hold it there," the other woman, who was in a very shabby makeup, stopped her from talking.

"Tell your mama say if she come back, and she no come see us return the money she borrow, is you she will use do collateral," she said and like they planned it, they said no more and left immediately. Bewa was shocked at what she had just heard, and she tried to regain her balance.'Why would her mum borrow money?' 'What did she use it to do,' so many thoughts ran through her mind.
