Lessons Learnt From Ekweremadu’s Case

These are lessons I personally learnt from the situation happening around Senator Ike Ekweremadu

Beyond the brouhaha and bashings around Senator Ekweremadu's arrest, I would love to clarify that I am not writing this article to support or criticize whatever he did nor am I here to judge him. We will leave that to the competent court of jurisdiction and for the UK police to conclude their investigations. I am here to put down lessons I have personally learned surrounding his case. Before I go on, I will briefly explain who he is and the story behind the senator’s arrest.

According to Wikipedia, Ike Ekweremadu listen (born 12 May 1962) is a Nigerian politician and lawyer from Enugu State who has served in the Senate of Nigeria since May 2003. He is currently a member of the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and was the Deputy President of the Nigerian Senate for three consecutive (6th, 7th, and 8th) senate. Senator Ekweremadu was recently appointed as a visiting Professor at a UK university but his appointment has however been suspended because of the situation surrounding his arrest.

On 23 June 2022, Ekweremadu was charged alongside his wife in UK Magistrate’s Court with conspiring to arrange the travel of a 15-year-old boy from Lagos into the UK to harvest organs for his daughter’s kidney surgery. Recent news reports that the boy is 21-year-old and not 15 as he claimed to be. Now that you have an idea about who he is, let's look at the lesson I learned surrounding his case. He is first a father and because of the love he has for his children, he is willing to do anything and go to any length to save them. You might be asking, "what happened to him or his wife donating one of their kidneys to save their daughter?" I don't know much about medical kinds of stuff but I believe a test was made to check if their kidney will be compatible with that of their daughter. But that's not the point I am trying to make. I am just trying to say that parents who love their children are willing to do anything possible for them. I bet it's something people can't understand until they begin to have their kids.

Secondly, Senator Ekweremadu was in a very good position to improve the health centers and facilities in his State and precisely in his constituency. His portfolio shows that he has been a deputy senator president three times. He could have leveraged this position to attract or provide world-class health facilities to take care of cases like that of his daughter. So where am I going here? If you find yourself in a position where you can help and transform lives, please do. No matter how small the change may be, just ensure that you do it diligently. When a matter arises in the future people will surely stick out their necks for you because of the good thing you have done in the past.

Lastly, remember when I told you that the new report states that the boy was 21 years and his passport confirmed it. We may never have known what happened in the background but the senator and the "minor" in question must have struck an agreement. The unfortunate thing is that it must have been a verbal one and was not put into writing and duly signed by both parties. Also, note that this might have not also been the case so we might as well wait for the investigation to be concluded before we can become judges. Here, I am trying to say that before doing a business that involves two or more parties, please ensure that your agreement is not just verbal. Ensure that those agreements are put into writing and duly signed with witnesses. If it is in your means to get a Lawyer, please get a good one.

In conclusion, just as I mentioned at the start, this article was not written to form an opinion on Senator Ekweremadu's personality nor was it written to judge him. Life is sometimes learning from the mistake of others so that we can always avoid similar ones when it comes our way. You may not have agreed with all I have written but you must have gotten one thing or two

Thank you for reading.
