Married For Five Days (part 3: The Bridal Shower)

The story continues...Kayla's Dad was impressed with what plans Harry had carried out so far for their wedding. Inwardly he had begun to like the young man already and saw prospects of a great man in him.

It was not easy to accomplish the much Harry had with the present economic state in the country. It only meant one thing, Harry was a determined young man, and he couldn't ask for anything less for a son-in-law. On the contrary, Kayla's Mom expected the worst wedding ceremony to be witnessed. Her daughter had complained of so many things yet undone, and the wedding was just two days away. "Can you imagine, mom, after making arrangements for my bridal shower and wedding gowns to be picked up today, Harry just canceled it!" Kayla told her Mom where she had gone to meet her at her business center. "What do you mean he canceled it?" Her mother asked. "He just brought in a fashion designer who took my measurements for both gowns. He said he was going to do it at a more affordable and reasonable price. Can you hear that? So I have to manage on my big day?" She was almost in tears.

"Kayla darling, you have to calm down and go through this. I would have given you money, but that will be covering for his inadequacies. I want the whole world to know that he is not worthy of my daughter so that when the time comes, everyone will know that you made your husband. Cheer up, darling, just play along." The elder woman consoled her daughter. "But mom, what if the gowns are not classy enough? What do you think my friends will say?" Kayla pressed. "Listen, just follow my lead. I think you now know why I insisted on that court marriage you guys had three days ago? Everything will be fine". She smiled and tapped Kayla on the shoulder. Mother and daughter spent some more time together then Kayla left.

On the Eve of the wedding, Kayla woke up very Moody, and her husband Harry was also tensed up following some last-minute preparations. He had gotten a call earlier from the designer that his wife's gowns were ready, so he was bringing them for her to try them on in case of any adjustments. The designer was a very patient man who took in all of Kayla's tantrums while trying on the dresses. It was either "this dress is tight" or "what kind of a designer are you? Did you have to open it here?" And again, "Jeez! Where did Harry get you from?" The complaints were much, but the Cool-headed designer only muttered his "sorry ma'am, I will make the adjustments before evening," and he left.

Kayla also insisted that Harry should give her the money for make-up and also the hair she'd made the previous day. He had just about Seventy Thousand Naira (N70, 000) left after settling the designer. So he asked how much that would cost, and she said, "55k" Harry screamed, "Come on, that's preposterous" "Oga, I don't get it. This money is for a total make-up package plus my hairdo. So what is preposterous there?" She demanded. "Listen, baby; I seriously don't seem to know the woman am getting married to anymore!" Harry threw up his hands in the air. "And you will get confused the more if I don't get that money now. Don't come and bring a make-up artist and hairdresser for me. You think I am ready for one of your surprises today?" She stormed out of the room. Harry gave her the money. It was evening; Harry was exhausted from running around. He had one more appointment with the photographer before meeting with Paul, his Best Man. Actually, Paul was to meet them at home so that they'd go to church for the final rehearsal. He finished with the photographer and rushed home only to meet his friend Paul already waiting for him.

"Dude, you look tired," Paul said with concern. "You bet I am. Where's Kayla? I guess she is ready too." Harry asked. "She is in there. Says she ain't going with us for the rehearsal." "What?! What's that supposed to me?" Harry asked his friend. "I don't know. She said something about not wanting to keep her friends waiting at her bridal shower" "No, that's not true." Harry went inside. He called out, "Baby! Babes, where are you?" "What is it?" She came out from the inner room. "Paul just told me you're not coming with us to church?" He enquired. "Of course, I am not. Today's not for the church, I have a bridal shower coming up, and I don't wanna be late," Kayla said carelessly. "So who stands in for you?" Harry queried again. "Get any girl in church. These things are just formalities" "But how do you want me to rehearse our wedding with someone else? Kayla, what's the matter with you?" He was getting upset. "Harry, you are the matter with me. This is our wedding, not just yours. I also have a say about what and how it should be but no! You will prefer you dictate to me where I should be, what I should do. I am tired. Listen, Husband Man, go to church and have your rehearsals and leave me to go have a good time with my friends. Not today!" She ended in a scream and left her husband astonished and staring into the blank. Paul walked in and took him by the arm. "Let's go, Man. Everything will be fine".

At the Bridal Shower, Kayla was surrounded by friends, both male and female. She had a lot to drink and eat while good music played in the background. Her dress was admired by many but her pride, or should we call it shame, would not let her admit that it was actually Harry who contracted someone to make it for her. The photographer, too, was doing a marvelous job courtesy of her husband. It was really a beautiful evening for her, glamorous enough for someone of her social standing. She had scored one over Harry, who would've wanted a less glamorous evening for her. She smiled to herself, oblivious of all the gist her excited friends were giving. She picked up the glass beside her and sipped from it, tomorrow would definitely come, and she hoped it would also be memorable like tonight.

Her phone rang. She picked it up from the side stool; it was Harry. She busied the line and returned the phone to where it had lain on the side stool. She wasn't going to let anyone spoil her evening, least of all the man she was to wed tomorrow!
