Married For Five Days (part 4: The Wedding...)

Even as things were no longer cool with them Harry and Kayla still went ahead with the wedding.

Harry couldn't sleep well the night before the wedding. He kept waking up at intervals to check the time. His wife had neither picked up nor returned any of his calls, and he fought the temptation of going to confront her at the venue of the bridal shower. He didn't understand why she was acting up this way, and it really bothered him. It was now 4:30 a.m., and sleep had eluded him completely. He sat up in bed as he stretched and yawned. He had a slight headache, but he knew he was done sleeping, so he reached for his phone and dialed Paul's line. "Hey Man" "Hey buddy, rough night, huh?" Paul said drowsily. "I swear down!" "So, what's up?" "Just wanna tell you to let's meet at the hotel. No need to come here," Harry said. "Alright, bro, I got you." Harry ended the call, and as he was about to return the phone to where it was before it rang. It was his mother. She called to give him courage and let him know the family was proud of the bold step he was taking and that God would certainly see him through this phase. Harry thanked his Mom, and they both said, 'I love you(s),' and the call came to an end. It was already a quarter to 6 a.m.

Harry dashed to the bathroom and had a quick shower, then grabbed his suitcase and hurried to the hotel where his wife and her friends had slept after the bridal shower. They were already up and making up when he arrived. He tapped on the door labeled 'The Bride' and walked in smiling at the girls in the room; "Good Morning, ladies," he bellowed in his best voice. "Good morning," came the chorus answer. Harry walked over to where Kayla was sitting in front of a wall mirror, being attended to by a make-up artist. "Good morning, beautiful," he greeted his wife and kissed her lightly on the neck while giving a courteous nod to the lady working on his wife. The lady smiled back her reply. "Good morning, Baby" Kayla greeted her husband with a smile, then quickly added, "Sorry I couldn't take your calls yesterday. The place was very noisy " "It's okay, my love. Let me also get dressed; we don't wanna be late in Church" "No, we don't," the wife said as she watched her husband walk out in the mirror.

Paul joined Harry a few minutes later in a room that was specifically reserved for the groom and his best man. Harry's other friends were to go straight to the Church where the wedding was taking place. Paul, who was already dressed, helped Harry with his dressing, and in a few minutes, he was smiling and taking a pose before the mirror. "How do I look?" Harry asked. "Like a Groom, bro. Let's go take those vows, buddy" they laughed and hugged. There was a slight knock on the door. Kayla walked in. "Wao! You look great, baby!" She smiled. "All for you, my darling" he hugged her, careful not to ruin her make-up and his suit. "I hope you brought the rings?" Kayla asked. "Of course, why would I forget something that important?" "Lemme see them," she demanded. "Hey, Come on, I have them..." "Can I just see them, Harry?" Her tone was a little bit edgy now. Harry decided not to push the matter; he dipped his hand into his pocket and provided a small plastic box. "Here," he handed it to Kayla. She opened it and took a look at the silver-coated rings. "What's the meaning of this? Harry, what's the meaning of this?" She threw the box at him with the rings falling off the hooks. "I don't understand. What's the problem now?" Harry tried to find out. "I specifically told you I wanted a gold plated ring. And you decided to make a fool of me. I knew you would do this, wicked man!" She was beginning to scream. "Please, Kayla, you've got to calm down; it's not so bad a situation," Paul tried to intervene. "Listen, Paul, tell your friend to better make available that gold ring or forget about that part of exchanging rings, period" she makes to leave, but Harry holds her by the wrist. "Baby, please be reasonable; if only you picked up my call yesterday, I was going to tell you the money I had left couldn't get us the gold ring; that's why I got these ones. But you didn't pick, I am sorry" he tried to turn her around, but she broke free and walked out. Harry stood dejected as his friend packed back the rings in the box. "Let's get to Church, bro." Paul encouraged him.

The wedding got people asking a lot of questions about whether the couple was truly happy getting wed. Kayla had a long face all through the procession and did not hide her mood. Harry kept forcing a smile, but it didn't fool anyone. During the sermon, his family and his wife kept having low-tone discussions. The preacher kept hammering on the theme 'Let Love Lead,' and Harry kept stealing looks at his Bride, who apparently was without love for him at the moment. He reached out to touch her hand, but she quickly moved it away. During the exchange of vows and rings, the couple sounded more like they were in a rehearsal instead of a real wedding situation. Kayla even looked away while Harry slit a ring on her finger. Harry was shaking with embarrassment. What exactly was happening to them? He began to wonder whether what they had shared for the past years was actually love or infatuation. He barely knew this lady he was saying the words "I do" to.

Finally, they were pronounced Husband and Wife. The reception followed in Grand style. Apart from the newly Weds, every other person had a good time. And it was during this merry-making time that Kayla's Dad would decide to halt the celebration for a special announcement. "Today, I am happy to have found a son in my son-in-law, who is now the husband of my only child. In order to encourage these two to start their family, I present these keys..." He brings out the keys from within his overflowing 'Agbada' and dangles it in the air "... to a new Three-Bedroom-Flat to them and also another key to a new Lexus Jeep that they would drive home with tonight..." The thunderous cheers from the guests could not allow them to hear the last words of Harry's Father-in-law, which was actually a presentation of an N300, 000 cheque for fueling the couple's vehicle. Harry's face couldn't help but feel elated; even the frowning Kayla was all smiles now. And while the jubilation continued, a text message entered Kayla's phone, and it read, "Do not allow him to boss you around in that house, it is yours. Also tell him to buy his own car, this one is yours"... It was from her Mom. Kayla looked over at her Mom and back to her husband, who was dancing his life away; she went back to frowning. She wasn't going to wait till the next day; this marriage would be on her terms!
