My African Mother

Growing up in a typical African home, we only get to eat the best of foods when we receive special guests or visitors.

Mom would make fried rice with chicken or pounded yam with egusi and ogunfe ( cow meat) only when we received guests or visitors. It has become a family tradition over time; I always pray visitors should come to visit so I can enjoy good food; some visitors would eat and leaves some remnants, as in 'visitor code' na...lol.

But all those ones from the village would eat and set tongues Wagging for more, it disgusts me so much, and I would swear in my mind. One faithful day, I still recall, it was a Wednesday, I can't forget in a hurry, I came back from work as hungry as a hog, I work in a Private firm as a secretary, that I had woken up so late, had to skip breakfast so as not to incur the wrath of my boss, He detests lateness and no one escapes his wrath if otherwise. On a normal day, I would take pap, another family tradition, like Mom would preach that pap gets one's body active when taking in the morning; yes, I would actively urinate throughout the day, to the point I was being labeled as "the Urinator."

I had taken just snacks during the break; I was already starving before evening. I met Mom coming out of the gate; I bowed and greeted her, then I screamed, I was so ravenous, and now my tummy hurts badly. "eh kini, what is it, Tolu? she inquired, patting me gently. "Ahhh, mommy, I am so hungry, my tummy is paining me, "...I groaned. "There's garri; take kuli kuli from the black leather; I am off to get something from mama Bola's shop, "...she said and left without looking at me for a second. "Garri again...ohh God," I murmured, dragging my legs as I found my way to the kitchen.

On entering the kitchen, sweet aromas welcomed me, swiftly I traced it down to the pot, lo and beheld was, the salivating minister of foods 'fried and plantain', close to the pot was a bucket of chicken. OMG!... I leaped for joy, already munching the plantains. I hijacked the chicken and opened my mouth to take a bite..."Tolu!!!..."Sir!.. I hurriedly stood up to face my boss; I had been daydreaming all the while, oh God!
