My Scariest Encounter 2

I'm afraid! I'm scared. Which way to go? Read up!My mind kept wobbling in thought as I introspectively reminisce everything that happened a few hours ago.

When I arrived at my village, I alighted the bus and walk as fast as possible, heading towards my house. On entering the gate, the way I banged the door behind me would tell you that something is fishy somewhere. I didn't mention the experience I had in Lagos with Uncle Joe to anyone, including my mum.

They asked and asked until they were tired of asking as I was not been responsive. I told them everything went well, but they still chose to doubt me. "How can everything be fine and you're not with an appointment letter?" "Moreover, where are your bags and clothes?" My younger sister asked.

I scolded her for questioning my being older than her but she was making a point. Uncle Joe was perceived as someone generous and benevolent, everyone knows and trusts. Even if I had told them, the tendency of them not to believe me is high. It would only turn out to be that I just wanted to create a bad image for him. For three to four days, I was indoors all through. I feared that they might come after me because they may think that I knew something already and that's why I escaped.

Gggrrrhhhmm....! My cellphone rang. It was an unknown number. All this while, I've been very skeptical about picking such strange and unknown phone numbers. So I ignored it. It kept ringing like three to four times and so I decided to pick it. As I pressed the answer button, I kept quiet waiting for the caller to speak first. "Hello Grace, why haven't you been picking up your calls. It's me, Uncle Joe's wife, Nene". She spoke.

"Oh, Aunty!" I exclaimed as we began to exchange pleasantries in our native language (Igbo). She asked me where I was now and I told her I have returned to the village. "Leaving your belongings here? What happened?" She asked. The question sounded as if she already had a clue of what transpired. But I guessed, she just wanted to hear from the horse's mouth. "Should I tell?

Well, she should know the kind of husband she married" I pondered. There were about two minutes of silence, then I decided to speak up.

I explain everything to her in detail, not missing any part. It was an interesting story, indeed! Her reaction was what took me off guard. I least expected it. I mean, how can someone laugh after hearing such an experience? She laughed and laughed till she fainted. She was now begging me to leave her alone as she kept on laughing as if I was holding her in the first place. To be frank, I couldn't fathom why she was laughing until she started explaining things to me. She told me of how Uncle Joe, her husband 𝐬𝐨𝐥𝐝 𝐡𝐢𝐬 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐠𝐞𝐫 𝐬𝐢𝐬𝐭𝐞𝐫, 𝐌𝐢𝐫𝐢𝐚𝐦 𝐚𝐬 𝐚 𝐜𝐨𝐦𝐦𝐞𝐫𝐜𝐢𝐚𝐥 𝐬𝐞𝐱 𝐰𝐨𝐫𝐤𝐞𝐫 𝐚𝐛𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝.

It happened to be that Miriam, was still in her teens when she was taken away from her parents to Italy. Everyone thought she was abducted. She sleeps around with men and gets paid but the money was given to Uncle Joe as the contractor so to say. Not even a dime was given to her. She felt betrayed by her brother and attempted suicide a countless number of times, but all proved abortive as she was caught several times.

But as she grew older and wiser into a full-grown adult, she saw that she can leverage it and scale her way through. The strategy she employed was by complaining to those wealthy men who had a date with her, telling them how she got into this, and pleading with them to help her escape.

Some paid attention, while some played deaf ears to her complaint. She continued with it and that was how she was bought over by one politician. They got acquainted and eventually got married. That was how she left that spot of filthy living.

"So you see Grace, your Uncle is a bad man right from birth. If I had known this, I wouldn't have married him. Well, I married him because he had money but I'm regretting it now. If your uncle sees an opportunity to sell me, his wife, he would have done it a long time ago! " As she explained, I kept quiet with my mouth wide open. I was shocked to hear this from his very own wife. She continued, " Thank God you managed to escape but you need to be very careful because they might come looking for you. Nobody knows a thing and goes free without being tracked down".

That was the end of the conversation as she hung up the call. I became relieved and eased by the explanation she gave, but I became tenser after saying that I should be careful. I mean, how do I go about it? How careful will I be that they wouldn't find me? I knew my end was near. That Afternoon I decided to go out for an evening walk. Just opposite the kiosk where I branched to get a bottle of cold drink and some snacks to keep my mouth whining, was a black bus with tinted glasses. I bent down to continue sipping my drink with its straw as I was chatting with my phone.

Suddenly, someone came closer to me asking for direction. It seemed he was looking for someone. The next statement he made was, "do you know this lady showing the man a picture?" "Oh! Is this not Grace? I thought I saw her here a while ago." The man replied pointing in the direction I was. I choked. Coughing hard as I paid off my bill. I followed another route and walked in a grotesque manner beating my chest because of the choking. I walked as fast as my leg could carry. But it couldn't carry me well enough.
