My Scariest Encounter 4

It's over! What am I living for? Woe! Unto the inhabitant of the earth, for the devil has come to live with you.

Wickedness in higher places is now the order of the day. What did the old man do? Because he laughed? That's not enough reason to take a life you did not give. He was shot to death. My heart skipped and my head spun around. I wanted to scream down the whole building. I wanted to run out and give him a last-minute hug, but I couldn't. It wasn't just time for me to meet my ancestors.

The fact that someone just died for me, kept ringing in my ear. The wind blew as the trees swayed their leaves. It was about to rain. I needed to go home but what's my fate out there? As I walked, it became darker and I felt like someone was following me. On approaching my house, I stumbled against a stone. The pain was just so different. My little foot got injured which made me leap whilst walking.

I felt something was wrong. Instead of barging in, I decided to sneak in not to make noise. Probably, my family was asleep. As I entered the already opened gate, I wondered why the gate wasn't closed. If I know anybody that is security conscious, that's my sister. She doesn't make such a mistake. Everywhere was as quiet as a graveyard. I could only hear the chirping of crickets. I stuck so close to the wall like a spider as a peeped through the balcony. The tables were down. Chairs scattered around.

As I moved closer, I could now hear my epileptic sister making some noise, which she makes when having a crisis. It started raining heavily. They couldn't hear my footsteps because of the sound made by the rain. I saw my mum on the floor as one of them stepped on her. He pressed his feet harder at my back at intervals. My sister on her side was foaming. Only the white part of her eyes was showing. I knew they were waiting for me to enter. But I was ahead of them. I had seen what I needed to see and so I withdrew myself and run out of the gate.

It was still raining. Everywhere was dark and cold. But, because of the security officers at every junction alongside the street light, I felt secure. "My house is on fire!" I shouted on entering the police station. Fire? Hey! Send for the fire service squad right away as the DPO pointed to some officers. "No! I mean assassins are in my house. My family is being held, hostage. They are after me Sir, we need to get there before they finish up my family" I explained and pleaded at the same time. They saw the grief in my eyes. Unlike them, they decided to take immediate action.

Fast forward...That night was so bloody. The shoot-out set the villagers into panicking. They couldn't pass through the gate because the police had already mounted the gate. How I wish she wasn't blind! She didn't know which way to go as she couldn't decipher what they were shooting from. She stood up and perch on things around to have a balance. "Mum! Mum! bend down" I screamed from outside. "Don't shoot! My mum's up". I pleaded. Grace, Grace my daughter..... she was still talking as a strange bullet hit her directly in her chest. She fell to the door and after losing so much blood she passed on. I couldn't enter the house because they were still in there although some did escape.

My sister was still having a serious crisis and needed help. What am I living for? I went this far as going to Lagos just to save my family from poverty and treat my mother and sister's health issues. But, now she's gone! I wept. With that grief and bitterness in my heart, I snatched the gun of a police officer by force and ran into the house. They wanted to stop me, but I ran fast. Where the strength came from, I couldn't tell. I was feeling energetic and very strong. I took them unawares. Of course, they weren't expecting my coming. They were hidden at the back of our kitchen door. I pulled the trigger without hesitating and before they could understand what was happening, they were down.

The policemen thought I was the one being shot and so they ran in to rescue me. To their greatest surprise, I was coming out like a superwoman, filling on top of the world. I walked passed them and they still turned their back to look at me. I went to the parlor where my Mum and sister were. I helped my sister with her drugs, raised her from the floor, and clean her up. She laid unconsciously on the chair trying to recover herself. I went to where my Mum lay. I couldn't just accept that she was dead. Just in a twinkle of an eye.

Suicide was calling me. But, I still had unfinished business with Uncle Joe. I was furious and bitter. But, I left the battle to God. If I'm destined to die, so be it. If not, God fights my battle. Not too long after my mum died, we were still preparing for her burial, when they brought the news to us. "A great Iroko tree has fallen!" "The savior in our time is gone!" "Father of many". The village town carrier announced. I left what I was doing and came out to hear the full gist. "Mazi Joseph Odimegwu has left us to meet our ancestors". "Our lovely Uncle Joe is no more" He announced beating his gong. People came out shouting and weeping at the village square. Many women whom Uncle Joe helped their children leave the country, began to mourn him. His scores were later disclosed to be that he was killed by his Co-business partner. Of course! It was high time he paid for his evil deeds.
