Not A Sad Story, Simply A Story.

I could start this story with the iconic "once upon a time" line, or I could reminisce about the time I felt truly happy. Or maybe I should have started with a sad memory of mine. Those starting lines would have been very literary, but this is not a story of happiness, or is it a story of sadness? It is simply a story.

Rest assured; this is not a story you'll read on Wattpad or any other pirated website you frequently go to download books illegally. No, it is not that kind of story. It's simply a story, and this is the story of how I walked on that windy night into that bar. Maybe I never actually walked on a windy night, and maybe I've never been to that bar, but who cares? This is my story. It's an account of my long walk to that bar that night, which changed my life. Maybe I was hoping to escape the deep hole and feeling of emptiness inside me. Maybe I thought if I walked quickly enough, I'd soon outpace that feeling.

I stepped into the bar. There was nothing special about it - it was just a bar. There was no grandfather clock ticking and chiming on the wall and nobody to take my coat off my shoulders when I stepped in. The barman was an elderly man with the look of one who had faced all of life's tribulations and scoffed at them. He had a wrinkled face and only one eye, which looked searchingly at me. I felt he could see through me and hoped he might see the pain I felt. Despite his attributes, I felt very comfortable with him. He was simply just a man.

I ordered two double whiskies under my breath as I sat and waited for him to take my order. He didn't move an inch. I asked again, louder this time; perhaps he didn't hear me the first time. Still, he didn't move an inch. Maybe he thought I didn't have enough money to pay for my drink. I brought out my leather wallet and made sure he saw the contents of the heavy wallet while I repeated my order. Then, he sat down and bellowed the question that still haunts my dreams," A penny for your thoughts?".

I didn't know when the first tears rolled out of my tear ducts or did I know when the others followed, but I know I wept and couldn't stop myself anymore. It was not because my life was hopeless and I wanted to start narrating a story; after all, it was simply a story. I told him of the hopeless times I lived in, my unrequited love, which was my last relationship, and I told him I demanded answers from whoever was looking down at us from above. I told him I wanted to die. I looked at his face, searching for any signs of pity, but he laughed deeply until he almost choked. I demanded to know the reason for his laughter, and even if I was given a thousand trials, I would not have been able to predict him simply looking at me with a smile and saying, "You won't get any donations from me, son. Finish your drink and get the hell out of my bar."

I finished the drink and paid, then left. I knew that one day, this trick would fade away.

After all, this story wasn't as sad story as you thought. It was simply a story.
