Oh Chike!

A short story of a young woman's crush...Chike... Chike my love! My boo...My darling! I murmured dreamily as I scribbled his name in different font styles all over my Phy 101 notebook.

I was just a first-year student of Biochemistry at a reputable university. As a newcomer or a 'Johnny just Come' as the old students are fond of calling us.. we were still caught up in the euphoria of being tagged by friends and family alike as University Undergraduates! You can know us at a glance by our gaudy clothes, extra fancy hair, extravagant spending, loud discussions, and naive facial expressions. But I like to think that I am different because I had older aunts who gave me lots of pep talks in preparation for life in the Big school. I liked to think that I was sophisticated, so I always carried myself pompously.

Take, for example, today; I was putting on red palazzo trousers, a black turtle neck, and black flats. I didn't put on makeup; I didn't need it either because I was blessed with dark-toned flawless skin. A true black beauty indeed! Then Chike walked in, and all other thoughts flew out of my mind! Chike was everything you could ever dream of in a 21st-century guy. He was tall, light-skinned, dimpled, slightly muscular, eloquent, and from a well-to-do family. My crush from day one. The only guy who makes me wish that I wasn't a well-trained Christian girl just so I could throw myself shamelessly at him as all the other girls do.

Instead, all I could do was drool... Surreptitiously, of course. Outside I was still Miss calm and proper, getting my adrenaline spikes from moments when we would hold each other's eyes. I kept on waiting for the day he'd walk up to me, kneel, and propose, just like in Korean dramas! 'Excuse me; you're Becky, right?' I immediately turned around to shun the person who dared to disrupt my daydreaming session, only to find the object of my daydream himself! It was Chike... Really Chike! And he was standing right beside me...and talking to me. My jaw literally hit the floor in shock! He stretched his hand out for a handshake as he continued his heavenly speech. 'My name is Chike, no relation to Chike, the music artiste,' He joked, displaying his dimples. 'And I am Becky, short for Rebecca. No relation to Rebecca, the Spanish TV soap opera. It's awesome to make your acquaintance'. 'Same here. Wait, o, by Rebecca, do you mean THE Rebecca TV series? You know, those ones where you stay awake until 12 am so you could watch it, Nigerian time?' 'It's a lie, Chike; you mean you watch soap operas? Like Esmeralda and All about Camilla and ......' 'Abeg o, sweetheart, it's just one movie I identified with; how come you're mentioning all those? Anyway, my aunt used to be crazy over those movies back when she was staying with us. So somehow, she transferred the crazy spirit to us, and we all stayed awake to watch it with her,' he explained in a nostalgic manner.

Meanwhile, I was still feeling awestruck and hoping I wouldn't say something stupid, and all the while, there was this sheepish smile on my face that refused to go down. Chike sat beside me, looked me in the eyes, and said the words I thought I would never hear... 'Becky, I've been in love with you since the first day I set my eyes on you. Your character, your sense of style and humor, everything about you, I love dearly. I walked up to you with a favor in mind... Can we date?' My eyes nearly popped out of my eye sockets. As I was dreaming? I pinched myself in secret to check, just to be sure. But it seemed real. I took my time, though, before I responded. 'Chike, I am a Christian girl, born and brought up to make Jesus and my family proud. Dating you would be the coolest thing ever, but then, I am not sure you know how to date in a Christian way'. I said glumly while twisting my hands worriedly. 'Sweetheart, right now, I love you more because of your words. Fear not, because you see, I have a working relationship with God. And since God is love, and I love Him, I believe He can teach me to love you in the best way ever'. He then laid his palms on each side of my cheeks as he told me earnestly, 'I would love you as God commanded us to love our love interests; I am here for the long run, sweetheart. I would cherish and protect you just like Gu Jun Pyo in Boys before Flowers; I would.......'Chike! For real? You've seen the movie Boys before Flowers?? Chike yes! Yes, to everything! I will! I do!'............... I jubilated......

A sharp painful jab on my ribs almost pushed me to the floor. For the second time that day, I turned around in anger at the person disrupting my time with Chike, only to find the culprit, my best friend Patricia, looking at me in panic. She angled her head towards the stage, and I turned with her. 'I won't repeat myself again, Rebecca; what was the last thing I said?' Prof Idika thundered down at me in his impossibly loud voice. I quickly jumped up from my seat as I stammered.. 'Actually sir, emmmm...... Well... You were teaching us Phy 101... As in, you were actually talking about Phy 101... What I meant to say was that Phy 101 was teaching......' 'Such irresponsibility! Even you, Rebecca? Sleeping in my class! Such irresponsibility! Come forward, take this marker and solve the equation on the board immediately!' My mouth dropped to the Ground again in shock. Solve Phy 101? I don't even know anything about Physics. I looked around the class... All eyes were on me; even Chike's eyes were on me. Oh No! I finally turned towards the board and saw the question...

A man standing between two cliffs produces a sound and hears two successive echoes at intervals of 3 s and 4 s, respectively.

a. Calculate the distance between the two cliffs. The speed of sound in the air is 330 ms-1.

b. Why will an echo not be heard when the distance between the source of the sound and the reflecting surface is 10 m?

Blood of Jesus! Blood of Jesus! Dear Ground, just open up and swallow meeee!!!!
