Olodumare Vs Oduduwa: Who Is More Powerful?

Perhaps, they are two of the most prominent names in Yoruba mythology. But, the argument of superiority or the confusion of their personalities still rages on.

At the same time, different accounts of their existence are present ( this is because knowledge of their existence was passed from generation to generation through Ifa texts that were mainly spoken; hence, the chances of misinterpretation were high). However, this article is based on more reasonable and credible accounts of the existence of both creatures.

OLODUMARE:

"O-NI-ODU-MA-RE," which translates to "the owner of the source of creation that does not become empty," is regarded as the basis of all creation. It is believed that Olodumare is a supernatural being whose source of creation or birth cannot be tracked. The Yorubas, both across western Africa, south America, and the Caribbean, have been known to worship this supreme being through "Orisha," which translates to "destiny chose him/her/them." These Orishas are presumed to be Humans who lived amongst men but were exceptional in various ways. As such, Olodumare selected them as the source through which humanity could reach him. It is believed that Olodumare does not concern himself with the affairs of men except in cases where these Orishas are helpless. The Yorubas believe Olodumare was the progenitor of all the universe and all the forces within it.

ODUDUWA:

"ODU-TI-O-DA-UWA" etymologically translates to "the great repository which brings forth existence." He was also bestowed with the title "OLOFIN," which translates to the "owner of the law." According to tradition, he was the first divine Yoruba king in their ancestral home of ile-ife, and all other royalties in the Yoruba race are traced back to him. He is considered "the leader, the hero, warrior, and father of the Yoruba race." While some accounts claim that he migrated from Saudi Arabia, this claim is faulty because the first settlement of ile-ife dates back to the "4th century BC, with elements of civilization appearing as early as the 8th-10th century. while the first mention of the Arab race only appeared in "the mid-9th Century"! Oduduwa is also believed to be the son of "Lamurudu," who was a renowned Prince and also the son of "a magician king." All of these prove that Oduduwa was a human being who, as a result of his supernatural exploits, was elevated to the status of divinity.

This would ordinarily mean that Olodumare was and is more powerful and regarded superior to Oduduwa in Yoruba mythology. However, in other not to commit the fallacy of hasty generalization, I would leave the reader and other seekers of knowledge on African history and culture to reach their conclusions.

My book "Olodumare: a blast to the past" offers a fictional depiction of these characters and how they affect reality.
