Our New Year Resolution: What It Ought To Be!

At every turn of the new year, particularly in our dear country Nigeria, we are commonly bamboozled with "New Year Resolutions." And at the end of the year, we are usually left at the mercy of not fulfilling such resolutions.

What actually went wrong along the line of getting the resolutions fulfilled? We always seem to forget. But the answer is simple: Bad Leadership! And bad leadership equals bad government. A single bad policy by the government affects every one of us: the rich, the poor, the religious, the non-religious, the northerner, the southerner, the westerner, and the easterner. No single citizen of the dear country, Nigeria, is spared from the sufferings and hardships we face on a daily basis. Who says the rich doesn't cry? Who says the righteous doesn't wail? No, it is not only the poor that laments. Yes, it is not only one particular tribe that shouts marginalization.

A supposed rich man who moves around with 'tight' security personnel because s/he feared being kidnapped, assassinated, or robbed is, in fact suffering in bondage. A Nigerian - no matter tribe or religion - who cannot travel to any part of Nigeria, afraid that s/he won't feel safe at any time of the day or night, is actually suffering in bondage. And when a Nigerian queues up every now and then in filling stations to get fuel at a high, uncontrolled, and non-uniform price, such is suffering in the midst of plenty, considering that our dear country is one of the world's producers of crude oil!

A citizen owning and powering an electricity generating set because 24 hours power supply is not guaranteed is not a state of luxury. S/he is fantastically suffering noise pollution while inhaling huge amounts of carbon dioxide that emits from such equipment. It's unexplainable that in this great country of ours, students in the higher institution of learning were 'forcefully' subjected to stay out of school for almost a year, and the government felt less concerned about it all along. As in, the government assisted in wasting a year in the lives of our youths.

Dear fellow compatriots, the earlier we understand that these problems we suffer in the 'Giant of Africa' are man-made and not God-sent, then the better we sit up and act to solve them - it is in our hands to solve the problems and not to leave them in God's hands to solve. We can start the repair process by voting for the right leadership on the 25th of next month, February.

Let's get our PVCs ready the first step of the way. Our PVCs are the powerful tool we can afford to change the bad leadership for the betterment of us all. Then, we must exercise our franchise by voting right on the day of the elections in February. Voting right means activating the power of our PVC in expectation of good leadership for the next four to seven years. This ought to be our new year's resolution and not the empty, fruitless declarations of this and that! Nigerians, we have no reason to suffer! There's no justifiable reason why we are in the midst of plenty and still swimming in the pool of lack! It is poor leadership that makes us suffer. And this must change! 2023 has bequeathed us the golden opportunity to change this. It is solely in our hands, dear Nigerians! It is solely our responsibility to take back our country from the old order, which has been misusing and wasting the abundance of resources our country was blessed with.

While I join the chorus in wishing all of us a Happy New Year, may I strongly implore us all Nigerians, both at home and in the diaspora, to vote right on Saturday, 25th February 2023? Voting right by voting for Peter Obi and Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed of the Labour Party, LP, is the best new year gift we should do for ourselves for the new year and the paramount thing we should do for our unborn generations. Yes, this critically determines what this year and the next seven years (and even beyond) will become for us.

Happy New Year to you and yours! Once again, Peter Obi for President!!
