Thirteen years ago, I lost the strongest woman I ever knew; My Grandma. I could remember when she was alive, on the 27th of every month; my Dad would give me a white envelope containing #200 notes (I don't know how much in total), and my duty was to go to her house and hand it over to her as her monthly allowance.
On many occasions, she'd tell me that the one sent to her last month still remained some little change (those grandmas don't spend much); she'd remove a few notes and give them to me, then lectures commence after she had served me Amala and Ewedu.
In her words, "you see the way your Dad is treating me ehn, he makes sure that no matter how little it is, he sends me something every month because he doesn't want me to lack anything. You must also do the same for your parents when you start earning, do you hear me?". After swallowing the last morsel, Amala nods her head as a symbol of agreement.
At one point, my Dad made sure my immediate Sister followed me to her place to perform the "monthly rite" even though we were young then; little did we know he was teaching us something, and as usual, Grandma brought on the teachings every time we visited her. We miss her so much, really, but to the Glory of God, for more than two years now, I have been performing the Monthly rite to my own parents as instructed by my grandma, and I can't wait to pass the same virtues to my next Generation.
The blessings that follow and much more of the happiness on their faces when I do this are unquantifiable! It may not be so much, but I feel fulfilled being a source of happiness to them. My Friend, I know the economy is bad, and your monthly income is really not much, but please try your best to send something home. These are the people who denied themselves of many comforts just to ensure we get to where we are today. Do you think it is nice for us to neglect them now on a note that "they understand now"?
The 50k you're spending every month on that lady at the pepper soup joint, fixing her nails and hair, then you need to start sending the money home. You never know how much your parents loved you until you have a child to love. Next to God, thy parents! Make your parents happy, let them pray for you, and see things turn around for your good... Remember, "What goes around comes around."
