Peace In This World.

Kwaghsaanga Tersoo is a Christian teacher who works among the youths. He lives in Makurdi, Benue state Nigeria with his family.

Joh 16:33 ISV I have told you this so that through me you may have peace. In the world, you’ll have trouble, but be courageous—I’ve overcome the world!” This is a gospel truth that is become very scarcely preached today. We prefer the gospel that says '...Even in this world, you shall have peace...' Maybe Christ was mistaken, and we are right? Then there is another silent 'gospel' that says: 'In Christ, you shall have plenty troubles, why to go so deep with Jesus?' The twin evil gospels above are overshadowing the words of the master! It is in this world that we'll have troubles, not in Christ.

It is in the world to come that true believers shall find real peace all around them as they rule with the prince of peace forever. When you meet true believers, even in their most prosperous state, they cannot really fare sumptuously like Lazarus's rich neighbor. It will be an insult to the sensitivities of the poor sick sores-filled Lazaruses longing for the crumbs that fall from their tables. Like Daniel and Nehemiah, there is a burden over the ruins of our Jerusalem that forbids us to remain happy and at peace even while highly placed in the palaces of this world. Our consecrated spirits can not accept the world's choice of meats and drinks; they are usually first offered to some idols.

So you see that on this side of eternity, it is hard to be at peace in this present world. I dwell in this world that God created, but it is so full of troubles; this is where Jesus said he is leaving us with his peace. In this war zone, Jesus could have chosen to carry us out of the world, right at salvation point, but he has instead left us here with sweet weapons of warfare. These two verses in chapters 14 and 16 of John are words spoken by our master the same night after he washed his follower's feet in John 13. They all speak about peace in a troubled world.

Peace I leave with you, my peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27 (KJV). These things I have spoken unto you, that in me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world. John 16:33 (KJV). There is also Jesus' prayer in John 17 following the same night before the crucifixion, and it carries these lines: John 17:11-12, 14-16, 18 (KJV), And now I am no more in the world, but these are in the world, and I come to thee. Holy Father, keep through thine own name those whom thou hast given me, that they may be one, as we are.

While I was with them in the world, I kept them in thy name: those that thou gavest me I have kept, and none of them is lost, but the son of perdition; that the scripture might be fulfilled. I have given them thy word, and the world hath hated them because they are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. I pray not that thou shouldest take them out of the world, but that thou shouldest keep them from the evil. They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world. As thou hast sent me into the world, even so, have I also sent them into the world.

Here, we see clearly in Jesus' prayer: 'God, please do not take my disciples out of this world but please keep them from the evil one.' Jesus himself is aware that our world is a battlefront, so he would not have bread and butter children; he prefers overcomes. One day God was busy boasting about one of his children, and the enemy accused him, with a valid charge, of favoritism. And the LORD said unto Satan, Hast thou considered my servant Job, that there is none like him in the earth, a perfect and an upright man, one that feareth God, and escheweth evil? Then Satan answered the LORD and said, Doth Job fear God for naught? Hast, not thou made a hedge about him, and about his house, and about all that he hath on every side? Thou hast blessed the work of his hands, and his substance is increased in the land.

But put forth thine hand now, and touch all that he hath, and he will curse thee to thy face. Job 1:8-11 (KJV)... Our God had to remove that fence of protection and allow Job the normal tests of life necessary for a saint to become an overcomer, a blessing to present and future generations. Similarly, Jesus faced situations of trial while on earth.

  • God, for whom and through whom everything was made, chose to bring many children into glory. And it was only right that he should make Jesus, through his suffering, a perfect leader, fit to bring them into their salvation.

[17]Therefore, it was necessary for him to be made in every respect like us, his brothers and sisters, so that he could be our merciful and faithful High Priest before God. Then he could offer a sacrifice that would take away the sins of the people. [18]Since he himself has gone through suffering and testing, he is able to help us when we are being tested. Hebrews 2:10,17-18 nlt

Here is encouragement for all the saints passing through trials and troubles. Jesus has the power to have kept or taken you away from the problems, but He chose to leave you there because he trusts that through his power, you can become an overcomer with distinction. He mostly allows his sons to be confronted with fiery furnaces, and while they expect deliverance, they end up hearing that the furnace is heated seven times hotter. At the very center of hopelessness, where nothing could be done, and they get thrown into the fire, he appears, and it is glorious. Someone rightly said, 'God has one Son without sin but no son without trial.'

May God help us.
