Pitakwa, My City!

The diverse nature of Pitakwa may be the reason why it is a very accommodating place. Everyone is welcome.

PH City, alias Pitakwa by locals, sits in the Niger Delta region of Nigeria. It is the capital of Rivers State and home to an array of tribes. We have the Ogoni tribe, the Ikwerre, Kalabari, Andoni, Ahoada, Omoku, to mention a few. It's like a mini Nigeria.

The diverse nature of Pitakwa may be the reason why it is a very accommodating place. Everyone is welcome. Among the foods eaten by Pitakwa people, bole, I dare say, occupies the top position. Bole is a sumptuous dish (if done right) of roasted plantain, sauce, and fish.

While plantain may be the main dish, the sauce is one aspect of the food that can mess up the entire diet if not done properly. The sauce is prepared using pepper, crayfish, palm oil, salt, seasoning cubes, and sometimes tomatoes.

One of the first things PH-bred people complain about when they go to other states is the fact that the bole does not taste the same. It always lacks that unique taste that you can only get from Pitakwa. Another popular dish worthy of note is the Fisherman soup. Yep, the name already gives you an insight on what to expect. You need to know a fisherman to be able to prepare that dish (Kidding😆. It doesn't hurt to know one, though🤷)

Fisherman soup comprises of as many sea creatures as you can lay your hands on. Rivers State is blessed with a generous amount of water and, as a consequence, lots of seafood (It's not called Rivers State for anything, you know?), so the difference is always clear when the soup is prepared in places with very little water. Shrimp, crayfish, catfish, oyster, crab, and periwinkle are some of the seafood that graces the Fisherman Soup. You should try it sometime.☺️

Pitakwa is not just blessed with a diverse populace but also a diverse collection of different delicacies. The Ogonis have dishes like eele ya ee ( a soup prepared with pounded ugwu leaf), akpo zia (pounded yam), sogoh ( salad prepared with okazi, local sauce, garden egg, dry fish, kpomo), abate (boiled cassava cut in thin strips usually eaten with coconut, groundnut or local sauce) and many other delicacies.
