Learn how to study and rightly divide scriptures in the article.
"Work hard (study), so you can present yourself to God and receive his approval. Be a good worker, one who does not need to be ashamed and who correctly explains the word of truth". (2Timothy 2:15 NLT) In interpreting scriptures, it's important to understand that no one scripture can stand alone. Scripture must be interpreted in the light of other scriptures. It is written that "in the mouth of two or three witnesses shall every word be established" (2 Cor. 13:1). Also, we must ensure that we interpret or apply scriptures contextually. We must be careful never to take a scripture verse out of its setting or context. Interpretation should be based on the ongoing discussion. To do this, we must study the verses before and after the main text to better understand the context of the discussion.
Furthermore, understanding language usage is very important in the interpretation of scriptures, especially for those who use the authorized King James Version of the Bible. If you don't understand the language usage of the translators, it's advisable to look up the portion in other newer English Bible translations. It will help you to understand the thought that's been communicated. Most people don't actually have a spiritual problem. Their problem, in most cases, is the English Problem. Someone I know once interpreted "...none shall want her mate" to mean that no one should desire a mate. Not only that, but knowing that the Bible was not originally written in the English language, it is helpful to use Bible Study tools like Bible commentaries, Bible dictionaries, Bible concordance, etc.
A believer or a minister of the gospel ought to be properly armed with correct and sufficient knowledge of his subject both for the communication of the gospel and its defense. A minister shouldn't be ignorant or ill-informed about the gospel. Again, we must understand that we are living in a new dispensation and that Jesus is the main message and focus of the scriptures. The law and the prophets were all about Him. And realizing that Christ has come and fulfilled the law according to scriptures, all scriptural teachings and interpretations under this dispensation should be given with respect to Christ's finished work and victory. The victory and future of the saints and the fate of the world are based on the cross of Christ.
Finally, submit your mind to the ministry of the Holy Spirit and ask relevant questions as you study. Light comes through the revelation of the Holy Spirit. He (the Holy Spirit), being the writer and author of the Bible, knows what it says better than anyone does. I don't mean to sound arrogant or proud, but it doesn't matter what is said or taught; if it doesn't line up with scriptures as revealed in the new testament, I can't accept it regardless of who said it. I constantly insist on scriptures, and I encourage my followers to do the same. We don't accept it just because someone we respect said it. No! It must be consistent with the scriptures.
