She's My Age Mate And Can't Be My Mentor

Recently, I overheard a discussion about someone wanting to take a class and needing a mentor to guide her but blindly refused the mentor assigned to her simply because she was someone she had known some time ago, and she happened to be her age mate. In her words, she was like, 'I can't possibly let her be my coach, not to talk of being a mentor. She is my age, mate, for God's sake.'

After carefully listening to the conversation, I can't help but laugh. Why was I laughing? Because it didn't follow, I tried to reason with every bit of what she said, but I couldn't find anything reasonable. I try to understand her from her perspective, and I see nothing to understand. Is the fact that the mentor is her age mate, or does she not want to progress? All this makes me have a deep thought about it, and my question is, was it really necessary?

One thing I loved most was not trying to uncover unnecessary information about people, including my coaches and mentors, of which age is part of it. I don't know, and I don't want to know. Yes! I believe anybody is capable of becoming a coach or mentor as long as they have the knowledge, skill, and wisdom required. Being able to teach and direct someone has nothing to do with age, race, ethnicity, or gender.

Individual ability to handle issues, God-given talent, and how they can sharpen their skill depend on many factors, of which Personality, personal discipline, consistency, and learning are part of it. We have all heard of the popular saying that age is just a number. For many years I have believed so much in this adage because as young as anyone can be, they would be recognized and respected by their achievement and the number of lives they have influenced positively. Age should never be a criterion for learning from anyone as long as the person has the required skills and knowledge.

The most important thing at the end of the day is that one gets the knowledge regardless of where, who, and what is involved. If obtaining knowledge from someone I'm older than will give me the skills and intellectual ability I need, why can't I? Do you believe age should be a criterion for knowledge?
