Solemn Lasting Days

Muddling thoughts of a girl who is determined to uncertainties to certainties amidst incessive situations.

They woke up next to each other the next day, cramped in a corner by the room. The whole night was uncomfortable and stuffy, with more than fifteen females in a tiny room barely enough to fit ten conveniently. To make matters worse, it only had one small window they would never dare to open because of mosquito infestation, but they still escaped in anyways and hunted mercilessly on their poor skins. They were more than five people snoring, snorting, and talking loudly in their sleep. Someone also kept farting in the middle of the night, which permeated the stuffed air making the situation even worse.

They had it extremely tough that they woke up with a lady's leg on Abena and another's hand across her face. They had a sleepless night, and there was totally no way they could stay in the room during the day except till evening again when everyone was ready to sleep. They had to pay, taking turns to bath in the poorly constructed bathroom with no proper water system. They had to fetch from the well with a leaking fetcher that had them pulling water more than they should, frustrating people's efforts.

The hunt for a job began, and Bewa wondered if Abena would be able to do anything. They had to search for a job or look for Abena's supposed relative. They needed to do one as soon as possible before things got really bad. And that made them indecisive. 'Which was better?' Bewa later concluded finding a job was better than looking for someone whom they had never seen or were not even sure existed. The hunt for a job wasn't as easy as they expected because the jobs mostly available were power, menial jobs that paid less and had no benefits whatsoever. Abena suggested working in a canteen or bakery was better. They were little experienced in work, and they'll get to probably eat too.

By the day, they knew they were running out of money, and there was still no success till the end of the day. They returned back to where they would sleep, which was a much worse situation than that was almost twenty this time around, with even a lady sleep walking this time. Bewa stayed up all night mulling on how she could make sure they got to live better; she took her high school leaving examination Abena finished schooling. She needed to think fast, or they'll die in abject poverty and illiteracy.
