Spinoza's Adequate Idea

This paper tends to address this important, disturbing and pertinent issue in a way that a lay man Can Clearly understand it. Let us look into the origin of covid-19. At the end, we shall proffer possible Solutions to minimizing the spread Of Covid-19. Let us quickly look into the origin of covid-19.

The adequate idea of a thing clearly and distinctively situates its object in all of its causal nexuses and shows what it is and how and why it is. Discuss this statement with particular reference to the Covid-19 pandemic.

INTRODUCTION

Spinoza, in his Epistemology (Theory of knowledge), tried to distinguish between Adequate and Inadequate ideas. Inadequate ideas are expressed in the thought of states of the body as it is affected by the bodies surrounding it. Their Sources are sensory images and qualitative "feel" (like pains etc.). Such ideas do not convey adequate and true knowledge of the world. Adequate ideas, on the other hand, are formed in a rational and orderly manner and are necessarily true and revelatory of the essence of things. Spinoza, in trying to define "Reason" as one of the three types of knowledge, said, "The adequate idea of a thing clearly and distinctly situates its object in all of its causal nexuses and shows not just that it is, but how and why it is." The person who truly knows a thing sees the reason why the thing was determined to be and could not have been otherwise.

To make Spinoza's Statement practical to the recent happenings in the world, let us look at this phrase," and not just shows that it is, but how and why it is" One could ask, does covid-19 exist? Like some people in this part of the world would like to make jest of it that it is not in existence. What would be their reasons for such claims? How can one know that covid-19 is not just only in existence but how it originated and way? One must take the necessary steps to save his/herself.

This paper tends to address this important, disturbing and pertinent issue in a way that a layman Can Clearly understand it. Let us look into the origin of covid-19. In the end, we shall proffer possible Solutions to minimizing the spread Of Covid-19. Let us quickly look into the origin of covid-19.

ORIGIN TO COVID-19

Severe acute respiratory Syndrome Corona Virus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) is a naval severe acute respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus. The first known infections from SARS-CoV-2 were discovered in Wuhan, China, in December 2019 and have since spread worldwide, leading to an ongoing Pandemic. CO, which stands for CORONA VI, which Stands for VIRUS D, which stands for DISEASE

COVID-19; A PANDEMIC (11 MARCH, 2020)

In the past few years, the number of cases of COVID-19 outside China has increased (3-fold and the number of affected countries has tripled. There are now more than 118,000 Cases in 114 countries, and 4,291 people have lost their lives. Thousands more are fighting for their lives in hospitals. Therefore, WHO has assessed that COVID-19 can be characterized as a pandemic because of the points mentioned earlier. Describing the situation as a pandemic does not change WHO's assessment of the threat posed by the virus. We have never before seen a pandemic sparked by the Corona Virus. This is the first pandemic caused by a corona Virus. Some countries are struggling with a lack of Capacity. Some Countries are struggling with a lack of resources. Some countries are struggling with a lack of resolve. More importantly, this Virus is considered a pandemic for not just a public health crisis; it is a crisis that will touch every sector. So every sector and every individual must be involved in the fight.

TRANSMISSION OF COVID-19 FROM PERSON TO PERSON

COVID-19 is mainly transmitted when people breathe in air Contaminated by droplets and Small airborne particles containing the virus. Infected people exhale those particles as they breathe, talk, Cough, Sneeze, or sing. Transmission is more likely when people are Physically Close. However, an infection can occur over longer distances, particularly indoors. Infectivity can occur 1-3 days before the onset of symptoms. Infected persons can spread the disease even if they are pre-symptomatic or symptomatic. Most commonly, the peak viral load in the upper respiratory tract. Samples occur close to the time of Symptoms onset and declines after the first week after symptoms begin.

SYMPTOMS OF COULD-19

Symptoms of COVID-19 are Variable but often include fever, cough, headache, fatigue, breathing difficulties, and loss of smell and taste. Symptoms may begin 1-14 days after exposure to the virus. Older people are at a higher risk of developing severe symptoms.

EVALUATION/WHY COVID-19 IS AN INADEQUATE IDEA

Spinoza, a Dutch philosopher and a rationalist described inadequate ideas; thus, inadequate ideas are expressed in the thought of states of the body as it is affected by the bodies surrounding it. Their Sources are sensory images and qualitative "feel" (like pains etc.). If we follow Spinoza's teaching on the inadequate idea, we will find that our knowledge of COVID-19 is limited. We are very much aware of this deadly virus called Covid-19, which grew into a pandemic and claimed thousands of lives. In order words, our knowledge of it is inadequate yet. There is a remarkable improvement in the findings of science concerning this virus which mutates into new variant forms like delta, omicron, etc. The big question here is, "what do doctors tell us about the vaccination"? Do you think they have a clear idea of what to do since they encourage people to keep vaccinating and still the risk of getting infected the second time after the vaccination? So we ask, do these mutations and repeated vaccinations prove any points about Covid-19?

Do you think scientists have done enough to fight this virus?

Descartes, before Spinoza, advised us not to accept any propositions as true unless they are clear and distinct. First, what is the cause of this virus? Nobody knows the cause of this virus, unlike that of Ebola that we know is related to Monkeys, and we saw how we collectively solved it. On the issue of covid-19, we only know it began in China. There is no scientific proof of the main cause of this virus. There is doubt the vaccinations followed usual and established scientific procedures of test, retest, and replication. In order words, our knowledge about the coronavirus is not clear enough, especially on the quick production of vaccines. This virus began in 2019, and in 2020 a vaccine was produced without proper examination of the long and short-term effects of the vaccine. How can you advise or mandate someone to take a vaccine that you don't know much about? How can we treat something that we don't know the cause of it? How many medical doctors are in support of this development? This can make one think if this vaccine was actually made to eradicate the virus or if it was made because it was urgently needed. We don't have the last word about this virus because it is still mutating. Karl Popper would say, we suspend judgment.

PREVENTIONS/SOLUTIONS TO COVID-19 PANDEMIC

1. Physical distancing

2. Quarantine the infected person (s) to avoid spreading.

3. Ventilation of indoor spaces.

4. Covering of nose while sneezing

5. Washing of hands regularly with soap and water.

6. Keep unwashed hands away from the face.

7. The use of face masks or coverings has been recommended in public settings to minimize the risk of transmission.

CONCLUSION

We all know that coronavirus is real and already in existence, but vaccination should not be made compulsory. It is not ethically right to enforce vaccination against this virus on an unwilling individual/client. Aristotle once said, "He who is more apt to teach is he that knows not only what a thing is and how it is but also why it is." It would be ethically wrong to impose the administration of vaccines over some diseases we are not yet certain about. Rather, we can take necessary precautions, as stated in this paper, to avoid the spread of this virus. Summarily, our ideas about covid-19 belong to the class of inadequate knowledge/ideas, so we should not base many scientific conclusions on such ideas. This calls for more openness, resilience in research, and carefulness in the drive against this virus.
