Stormclouds And Sunshine

It's a terrible side of humans, some have mastered the art of masking it and others would rather let people around feel a little of the gall that had sneaked its way onto their lips and into their mouths during the night.

Most of the time, they never really know why the sudden switch, but, like the flames of a wildfire, it burns and burns till it burns itself out, running out of reasons to keep being upset, noticing the smile sneak to the corner of their lips, slowly, but continue till the laughter bursts out and the dark clouds on their brow fizzles into a light-heartedness. I was numbered amongst them that wanted to give all and sundry gall, bounteously and cheerfully that really terrible day.

It had been my first fight with Esther. The first time in a year since we first met at the library and never crossed paths again, the first time she showed her true nature and how well social media hid true feelings and thoughts- good thing my version of the app was modded so I could still view deleted content- it was the first time I doubted how I really felt about everything and everyone since most of my relationships before her had always been online.

Questions like, why did I lie to myself? Did she ever mean it all the times she said she loved me too? Why was I stupid to choose her over people I saw every day who had their hearts on their sleeves when it came to me? I was shaken, but it was much easier to disguise hurt as anger.

It was the day I swore I'd never try to keep a dying conversation alive, to be content with the okay and sure. I had it in mind even to delete all social media accounts. But that afternoon, it was a few days more- about a week- to Keviwe's birthday, Esther's also; my little sister. She had made a post on her status, which I responded to.

Scratch that last statement; she actually responded to my status; I remember now that I had decided that those I can't hold a reasonably lengthy conversation with were not worth the bother of starting one with, and I was faithfully sticking to that choice. I had posted about Patience, and she commented about the order of my wish; irrelevant, I know, right, but I just played along; after all, I was bored to death, and Esther, who would have kept me company, was the one that hurt me this time around- sniffles.

We had a light banter and teased each other; she said she needed four hundred dollars; in native Nigerian currency back then, it was about two hundred and fifteen thousand; it cracked me up; there was barely a thousand in my account. She sent her Ethereum wallet address and asked me to send it there; with the dangerous gas fee associated with Eth and Eth tokens, she still asked for it. Said she wanted to learn UI/UX design and needed a new PC since the last one crashed.

Talking about things that simply took away the anger and hurt. We laughed- at least I did- I wasn't sure about these ladies sending laugh-out-loud emojis and stickers on WhatsApp anymore, sniffs- writing about the deception on social media from personal experience was really disturbing; hopefully, it won't happen to someone else after reading this article. So there it was; it was at that point I noticed how bright the sun had been and how blue the sky looked.
