Strengthen Your Faith Through Exercise

Learn how to make your faith effective and operative through the application of God's Word

"One day, the Apostles said to the Lord, 'We need more faith; tell us how to get it.' 'If your faith were only the size of a mustard seed,' Jesus answered, 'it would be large enough to uproot that mulberry tree over there and send it hurtling into the sea! Your command would bring immediate results!"(Luke 17:5-6)

There are believers who spend all their precious time begging God to increase their faith- that is, give them more faith. They are like the early followers of Jesus who thought they needed more faith to be able to forgive as Jesus had just told them. They reasoned that more faith meant more ability. But the Lord Jesus, through His response, showed them that their problem was not the QUANTITY of their faith, but its QUALITY. If they only had faith as little as a mustard seed, Jesus said, "it would be LARGE ENOUGH to uproot that mulberry tree over there and send it hurtling into the sea! Your command would bring immediate results!" The efficiency of faith is not in its QUANTITY but QUALITY. And by QUALITY, I mean CAPACITY, which also refers to strength.

So, it is not about HOW MUCH (big or small) faith you have. It is about how much your faith can do. Have you ever noticed that only Jesus talked about big, small, little, and no faith in His teachings? None of the Apostles spoke about it. They only concerned themselves with teaching the saints how to strengthen and use the faith they already have. Do you know why that is? It's because Jesus lived and ministered under the Old Covenant and His audience comprised of spiritually dead people. Salvation was not available during Jesus' earthly ministry, and neither had the Holy Ghost been poured out on all flesh. As a result, faith in God had not been given to people.

Salvation could only become available after Jesus offered Himself as a sacrifice for humanity's sin on the tree. And the promise of the Holy Ghost could only be fulfilled after Jesus rose again from the dead and ascended to the Father in heaven. Now, the Holy Ghost imparts the God-kind of faith into the hearts of those who open their hearts to the gospel and enables them to trust in God and to walk daily with Him by believing in Jesus. To those who believe in Jesus Christ, God has given a measure of His faith. This God-kind of faith in the believer can not become bigger or smaller. It can only become weaker or stronger depending on the believer's stewardship of it.

So, the emphasis of the New Testament is on growing (developing) or strengthening the faith the believer already has. Every believer has faith. God has given us His own kind of faith. The God-kind of faith is a living faith and, as such, can grow, become developed, and strengthened. This happens by putting it to work through meditating on the word of God, prayer, and actual exercise. The God kind of faith will always work if the believer will put it to work by exercising it. If you don't make use of the faith you have, it will remain dormant, weak, and unproductive.

"You will never be able to eat solid spiritual food and understand the deeper things of God's Word until you become better Christians and learn right from wrong by practicing doing right." (Hebrews 5:14 TLB). In the same way, you will never know how much faith is in your heart and what this faith can accomplish until you begin to exercise it. Don't be concerned about the size of your faith. Every believer has the same faith. No one has received a bigger or smaller measure of faith.

Be more concerned about putting your faith to work. The efficiency of your faith is dependent on your exercise of it. Your faith becomes stronger and more efficient with respect to the measure you put into work in your life. Exercise it in small and everyday matters, and it will become strong enough to handle big matters. Consider an athlete desiring to compete and win an Olympic championship. He doesn't start off as a world-class athlete. He will become one through consistent practice or exercise.

Regardless of the desire, the human body won't become strong overnight. If you want a strong body, you have to intentionally engage in activities that enhance the growth and development of body cells. To grow, develop and strengthen your faith, you have to exercise it. According to the highly esteemed Pastor Chris Oyakhilome, "growth is not a miracle. It is the product of the application of revealed principles and means." So beloved, don't ask God for more faith. You already have all the faith you need: the God-kind of faith. Grow, Strengthen and develop your faith, and it will always work for you.
