POLITICAL CAUSES OF TERRORISM by Deborah Ebeh...Terrorism is one of the various social vices in the society. It is the unlawful use of force or violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives.

There's a saying that there is no smoke without a fire, and so it is for terrorism; there is always a cause for every action, and the cause of terrorism could be channeled to the political sector. Some of these causes are stated in the following paragraphs.

Firstly, lack of political legitimacy: In political science, legitimacy is the right and acceptance of an authority, usually a governing law or regime. At the same time, authority denotes a specific position in an established government under a democratic political system. A government is considered legitimate if it reaches power via democratic popular election, as stated by the law. In a condition where the leader is not elected in a free and fair election or where the citizens operate on a political apathy system, then the political leader elected cannot be held accountable for the country or state. The leader can never have the citizens in the plan because he/she believes the masses did not vote them into power. This attitude by the leader can lead certain people to fight against the government.

Secondly, inequality among the culturally defined group: In a country where multi-cultural group exists, if the government or the political class cannot develop and meet the demand of the cultural group equally, especially for a long period, that singular act has planted an ideology in the mind of those that belong to that particular cultural group, that they are rejected and forsaken. This inequality can exist in the form of social amenities such as; government appointees and allocation of funds.

Thirdly, Poor funding of the military force: Terrorism never turns into a big threat, just in one day. It all begins little by little, and without a call to action, that little violence turns into terrorism. Most times, the military receives alerts of those attacks, but there is no high technological equipment to combat those crimes. You can select any of the nations suffering from terrorism and consider the annual military budget allocation.

Fourthly, Corruption in the government: when the government cannot give a valid account statement, then it is a big problem in a country. The fund allocated for agriculture, mineral resources, military, and educational sector, and other important things, that brings growth to the country are diverted or embezzled by some group of government personnel, the citizens will never be happy, and that can stir up hatred and a violent spirit to fight against the leaders, thereby terrorizing the entire country.

I cannot conclude without any solution in place. Terrorism can be conquered and called a thing of the past in our nation if we can kick out the bad practices in the political sector listed as the causes and those not mentioned. One of the foundational solutions in eradicating political apathy, which gives room for the rigging of election results, starts from the counselor in the local government ward to the top, which is the presidential office.
