The Birth Of A New Nigeria: We Now Have A Choice.

Few days ago, a statistical report from Debt Management Office, DMO revealed that Nigeria's debt service cost has outstripped the revenue. And what it means in actual sense is that there lies dangers ahead in our national life; that the inflation rate will hit rooftop, and that hunger and starvation will be the order of the day as we live on.

The Nigerian economy is bleeding. The naira has been on a free fall against the dollar, with the price of every commodity rising to an all-time high, forcing those who can barely feed for a day to continue dying in the face of the harsh realities of our economy. As a matter of fact, this is the direct consequence of voting incompetent leaders based on primordial sentiments of the tribe and prejudiced biases of religion. Nearly one in three people, according to United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, are suffering from access to an adequate meal in the world today, with Nigeria being one of the countries that take a large chunk of the share ratio.

Thousands, if not millions, of our workers, are being pushed into abject poverty. Many of them are owed monthly salaries; are paid a meager peanut at the end of the day's job, while others are being laid off from working simply because the establishment is either on the verge of collapsing or has totally collapsed. At this very moment, millions of our people - kids, young and old - are suffering from hunger. This is again a direct result of looting and misappropriation of public funds by our supposed transactional leaders. In an attempt to survive in these very harsh realities brought about by the bad policies of our machinery in government, many children who ought to be in school today are engaged in child labor.

While it could be understood that the global economic recovery is hampered by such challenges as policy uncertainties, labor market fluctuations, rising inflation, supply chain disruptions, and so on, the main overall challenge is leadership. It is a gross misnomer to send a car mechanic to fix an aeroplane. Righting the wrong of inefficient leadership for the administrative affairs of our dear nation is the opportunity that the 2023 general elections are offering us. We have a choice before us to choose the path of ending poverty in all its forms or remain in its devastating abject state with the stigmatization of being mocked as the poverty capital of the world.

Dear Nigerians, we have a choice before us ahead: the choice to end hunger in our environment and achieve food security in our land, the choice to ensure healthy lives among all of us, and to promote a state of well-being for all ages. We have a choice to ensure inclusive and equitable quality education and as well promote life-long learning opportunities for all of our younger generation. We have a choice to ensure inclusive and sustainable economic growth, full and productive employment, and decent work for all. We have a choice to ensure sustainable consumption and production pattern in the area of industrialization. We have a choice to ensure the promotion of a peaceful and inclusive society for sustainable development, provide access to justice for all and build effective, accountable, and inclusive institutions at all levels. And quite frankly, it is only in the candidacy of HE Peter Obi and Sen. Dr. Yusuf Datti Baba-Ahmed, the Labour Party Presidential and Vice Presidential candidates, that we have visionary leadership whose capacity can turn around the deteriorating state of our dear country for greatness.
