The Holy Spirit In You

Find out what it means for the Holy Spirit to live in you and make your body His temple.

One of the greatest events in human history is God- in the person of the Holy Spirit- taking residence in a human being. God becoming one with a human being is the greatest miracle of the ages. This happens when the Holy Spirit comes into an individual to dwell in his body. Paul, speaking to the Corinthian believers along this line, asked them a sublime question: "Do you not know that you are God's temple and that God's Spirit dwells in you?" (1 Corinthians 3:16 RSV). Again, Paul asked them, "Do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit within you…?" (1 Corinthians 6:19 RSV)

A person's body becomes God's temple (property) the very moment the Holy Spirit claims such an individual and takes His permanent residence in him. From that moment, the individual becomes God's exclusive property- claimed for God by the Holy Spirit- through the individual's faith in Jesus Christ. Now, the individual may not know it. He may even, by consent of his will, either through ignorance or a conscious act, violate his body by allowing foreigners (the devil and his demons) into his body.

However, that doesn't change the fact that he is God's legal property, purchased through the blood of Jesus and consummated through the person's faith in the gospel. This is the reason we teach and preach the gospel. We want to bring people into their true element in Christ so that they can live out their true reality in Christ through an accurate knowledge of Christ's already accomplished work of redemption. This way, everyone can consciously hand over their temple (body) to the legal owner (God) and allow Him to use it as He wills.

Just as in normal everyday life, you can purchase a property without immediately taking possession of it. Until the necessary documents have been signed, you can't claim legal ownership of the property, even though you have paid in full for it. But the day you sign the document, it becomes yours legally. A business transaction is consummated after every necessary document has been fully signed and authenticated.

Technically and legally speaking, God paid in full- through the precious blood of Jesus Christ - for the redemption of every human being- past, present and future. However, this business transaction is finalized, consummated, and authenticated the day and moment a person yields to the Lordship of Jesus Christ and, by faith, signs his name in that redemptive document to validate that he accepts what Jesus did for him and on his behalf.

Once this is done, the Holy Spirit immediately swings into action and marks off that individual, through the blood of Christ, as God's property. The transaction has been fully consummated, and God has taken full possession of His property. Since the deal has been sealed, God then hands over the person to the Holy Spirit so that He can fully occupy and care for this property as God's own. So in that sense, your body becomes the TEMPLE of the Holy Spirit. The word 'temple' means different things, depending on the perspective from where you view it. From the human perspective, it is a place of worship because people go to the temple to worship God.

However, from God's perspective, the temple is simply God's house- His permanent abode or residence. So, when the Holy Spirit sanctifies a person's body and makes it God's temple, He simply makes the person's body God's house- His permanent abode. Every house owner takes the responsibility to take care of the house and properly maintain it. It is the house owner's or occupant's responsibility to take care of the house.

We know that the maintenance of a house defines the character of the owner or occupant. You can assess a person's character with respect to cleanliness by the way his house looks. Cleanliness, they say, is next to godliness. This is why Paul said, "If the Spirit of God, who raised Jesus from death, lives in you, then He who raised Christ from death will also give life to your mortal bodies by the presence of His Spirit in you." (Romans 8:11 GNT). This means that if you let the Holy Spirit take full residence in you through your faith in the redemptive work of the Lord Jesus Christ, then, He will take care of your body, which is His temple. But you have to put your signature on the document, through your faith in Jesus Christ, to validate God's claim on your life.

The Holy Spirit is the Greater One- the Spirit of Almighty God- and He wants not only to be with you but also to live inside of you. He wants to take care of you from the inside out. But He is only obligated to perform that function in God's house, where He is the occupant. Will you let the Holy Spirit come in by yielding your will to the Lordship of Jesus Christ? Will you give the Holy Spirit the right over your life by opening your heart to the Lord Jesus Christ?

He can't come in until you offer your body to Jesus in love and faith as a living sacrifice. When Jesus becomes the Lord of your life, the Holy Spirit will come in to establish His Lordship in every aspect of your life. Do you want to yield or surrender your will to Jesus and take Him as the only Lord and Saviour of your life? Do you want to give Jesus the full right in your life so that He can fill you, through the Holy Spirit, with the love and presence of God, your heavenly Father?

Please pray with me…

Dear heavenly Father, I believe in the gospel and the perfect redemption that You have obtained for me through the sacrifice of Jesus Christ, Your beloved Son. Today, I yield my will to the Lordship of Jesus and take Him as my only Lord and Saviour. I receive remission for my sins through the blood of Jesus and the gift of the Holy Spirit as you have promised in your Word. I thank You, Father, for I am now saved, and I am Your beloved child. Glory to God!

Congratulations, beloved; I'd like to hear from you. Please, do reach out to me and let me share in your joy and help you to get to know Jesus better.
