The Negative Side Of Solitude

This article stresses the need to keep in touch with people and the negative side of solitude.

The story was told of a man, George Bell, who had died in his apartment at North Central Queens, and for days, no one knew. Sniffing a fetid odor, George's neighbor had called 911. According to New York Times, 'the puffy body on the floor was decomposed and unrecognizable. He had lain there for a while, nothing to announce his departure to the world, while the hyperkinetic city around him hurried on with its business.'Research has shown that there's a long-standing link between loneliness and depression. Prolonged solitude isn't safe at all.

Do you have issues coping or getting along with people? I would advise you work on it. I, hitherto, don't like disturbance. The only person I could open up to is my mom, and if I couldn't speak to her, I would just store them away in my heart and ponder over them. But, a time came that I had to make a conscious effort to open up - not to every Dick and Harry, but a very few trusted confidants. I'm really surprised at how I manage to speak up these days on matters the original me would simply keep to myself.

I may not know what had led to George Bell's death, but my point is this; if you fail to speak out, no one will know what is wrong with you. That's why I always emphasize the need to build trusted relationships, love, support, companionship, friendship, and accountability. You need a solid support system. Everyone needs a support system. You need someone you can share your life with. No one is self-sufficient; no one is an island.

Again, we have to purposely look away from people's weaknesses if they are not toxic. Focus more on their good sides. You know, no one is perfect. Not even you. Someone else is trying to condone your excesses. If you see those traits you find unattractive and disapproving in people, make sure they are not found in you. Run a check on yourself constantly and be honest. Why is everyone else bad but you? Is that possible? Why do you complain about everybody you stay or live with? Honestly, there should be something about you that you haven't noticed or failed to accept.

Let me write this in caps. CHECK ON PEOPLE FROM TIME TO TIME. WHEN SOMEONE COMES INTO YOUR THOUGHTS, WHISPER A PRAYER FOR THEM. DON'T ALWAYS ASSUME THEY'RE FINE.

Learn to tolerate people. Make allowance for people. Work on your social skills.
