Sudan, a country located in the Horn of Africa, has been experiencing a political struggle and civil war since last week. The conflict began after tension between the army and the powerful paramilitary group, the Rapid Support Forces (RSF).

The key question in the conflict is who will be in control and the military's commander-in-chief during the integration period.

This conflict has already claimed the lives of at least 185 people, and thousands have been injured in just three days. According to the United Nations, the crisis in Sudan could worsen the already dire humanitarian situation in neighboring countries, including Ethiopia, South Sudan, Chad, Somalia, and Nigeria.

Nigeria is already grappling with several security challenges, including Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast, banditry in the Northwest, and farmer-herder clashes in the Middle Belt.

These security issues might become more serious due to the turmoil in Sudan, which would result in further forced emigration, fatalities, and a humanitarian disaster.

This is because the proliferation of small and light weapons and the influx of refugees from Sudan could fuel existing conflicts in Nigeria, leading to a worsening of the security situation.

Furthermore, Nigeria and Sudan have a shared history of military coups and political instability, and the current conflict in Sudan could have a ripple effect on Nigeria's democratic process. The conflict could embolden anti-democratic forces in Nigeria and lead to a reversal of the country's democratic gains, leading to a further deterioration of the security situation.

Therefore, the Nigerian government must double up on proactive measures to address the security challenges and prevent the conflict in Sudan from spilling over into the country.

The international community must also step up its efforts to prevent the proliferation of small arms and light weapons and address the root causes of conflicts in the region. It is crucial to promote peace, stability, and unity in Africa.
