The Village People

It shows the general believe that village people are wicked and evil. It tries to dismiss the notion that village people are not always like that.

We have been living in Abuja, the state capital, since childhood. We only know we have a village; we have never been there. Our parents think that the wizards and witches of our village have the power to prevent our successes, and if they do not succeed at that, they will resort to killing us. That is what we were made to believe right from our childhood. Don't mind our parents; it is their experience of life that is scaring them! We are five siblings; I happened to be the family's third child. I have one elder brother and an elder sister; the other two children of the family are my younger ones.

We did our Primary School in the state capital, the same as the secondary school. Whenever our parents want to travel to the village, we are always left behind for fear of the wicked ones in the village. Most of the time, they always traveled to the village during Sallah festivals to celebrate with their family. Unfortunately for us, since we do not usually go with them, we do not know our family members, talk more to know our household in the village. Our parents do not see anything wrong in this; all they care about is protecting us from getting killed or from not being prevented from succeeding.

On this particular occasion, there was to be a grand ceremony at the village, where sons and daughters of the village needed to be in attendance. Our parents could not stop us from visiting the village this time. Especially our mother is adamant about not allowing us to step foot next to the village. Our Father is a bit indifferent about the juju, but considering his experience, he had to go with whatever our mother says concerning our protection.

The day of the occasion finally came. We had to travel from Abuja down to the village as the ceremony would be held the following day. On our way to the village, we had a fatal accident, where one of my younger brothers had a leg fracture. The first thing my mother utters is the incident caused by the village people. She wouldn't have allowed us to follow them to the village if she had known. I wondered, is there anything that will prevent what Allah has ordained from happening to someone? Or does anyone has the power to harm another person without Allah's knowledge? All these are running through my mind because I dare not say them aloud if I do not want to be reprimanded. The wizards and the witches have no power except the one that Allah has given to them. Any harm they cause to someone has been pre-destined, and it is Allah that made it happen, not by their power. We had to go to a nearby hospital to fix my brother's fractured legs. Had it been that the accident happened nearby Abuja, we would have been told to go back home and not be allowed to go to the village again. But it happened near the village, so we had to continue with the journey.

At the village, we were told not to go around and not to visit another household. Even if they brought food for us, we should not eat it. There are some of the households that are tagged as the ones with the most number of witches and wizards. These households are a no-go area for us. The most disturbing part of it all is that even in our household, we were not allowed to eat any other person's food other than that of our grandmother. I was even more perplexed because the suspicion was so tense. The people that we were supposed to be happy to see for the first time and gist with are now the subjects of suspicion.

To cut a long story short, the ceremony begins. It came to the turn of the Youth of the village. My siblings and I are not used to speaking our local language, so we had problems interacting with our peers in the village. Don't mind us; it is not our fault. We are used to speaking English right from childhood; therefore, we understand little of our local language and can barely speak it. This embarrasses us for the first time. Because schools in Abuja do not even allow speaking vernacular, talk more to feel embarrassed about our inability to speak our local language. Thankfully, nothing bad happens in the village. We left the village for Abuja the following day.

Note:

Nobody has the capacity or power to harm anybody; if it happens, it is with the permission of Allah. And the person that tries to harm another person will be punished for his evil intent. There are witches and wizards, but they do not have power of their own except for the ones bestowed on them by the almighty. Any misfortune that befell someone happens with the knowledge of Allah. Nobody has the power to cause another person's death and prevent the success of another person. Any accident while traveling would have happened to someone even in his comfort home if it had been pre-destined! Stop preventing your sons and daughters from knowing their Kins and relatives. Knowing them will come in handy for them in the future. Someone that cannot prevent his own sickness and death cannot cause another person to be sick and die. The story is fictional!
