Why We Keep Getting It Wrong

Ethnicity and religion are the major barriers to the development of our nation.

We fail to put the right template in place, which is why we still get it wrong. We place a premium on religion and ethnicity, which these two are not helping us in any way. China and India as case studies. Having diverse religions and ethnicities does not deter the two countries from making progress and developing their Nation. Who put a spell on the African continent, especially the supposed Giant of Africa? When will we start getting it right?

Any development in the country is solely on religion and ethnicity. The two seem not to be working for us; why don't we try another approach? The populace will be divided because of these two. We tend to support a leader based on these two factors. We tend to side with anyone from our ethnic or religious affinity. We forget that what we need as a country is whoever or from wherever a person might come from; it is what he has to offer on the table we should be concerned with. Why we have not been pacing on the right path is because we still believe that if someone is not sharing the same faith with us, or is not from our ethnic group, that someone cannot be good as a leader; hence we cannot give our support to an outsider.

This notion is wrong; there is no magic adopted by the developed nations. All they do is in seeing themselves as one. Why can't we emulate them? If the politicians see that people do not care from which background they are and care less about their faith, they will try to bring something good to the table so that they will be the choice of the populace. We have now found ourselves where an incompetent person of all incompetents sees himself as the one to rule us. Suppose we are not divided into ethnic and religious grounds. Those that know that they are not worthy of being a leader wouldn't even make an effort to want to be one. The opportunists are now using our division to feed their ambition. And when this is happening, we are inviting a disaster that will eventually consume us all.

The political atmosphere in Nigeria at present is nothing to write home about. One is saying the reason why he should be our president is that it is his turn. One thinks because he is an Igbo and a Christian, it is his turn. Another one thinks that since he is from the North and they have the popular votes, he should be the chosen one. Since the masses care less about the manifestoes of these political office seekers, these people tend to misplace their priorities.

When we need in the country at present is someone that has the skills and knowledge to bring us out of this impasse. We need the right leader with the right skills to save us from this predicament. There are many things wrong in this country that need to be corrected. We are no longer safe. Our educational institutions are going into a state of oblivion. The welfare of the populace is in jeopardy. And what we need is someone that can fix it. It will not happen by miracle, and I am not of the opinion that one messiah can come out of nowhere and do this in a glimpse of eyes. All I am saying is that we need someone that will set the pace.

Someone that will put us on the right footing. We cannot continue to be plying a bad road, less we will be doomed! It has come to a point in our country that we need to choose right. We cannot get it wrong this time around. We need to elect a leader who has a track record of doing this and setting the pace for others. We should no longer elect a leader based on his/ her ethnic or religious affiliation. May this country be safe from those that have the intention of leaking our treasury dry. May such people never even have the opportunity to catch a glimpse of the Aso rock. We need to get it right, which should be now or never!
