Witchcraft

This is a sequel to “Letters to Subola". The definition of witchcraft is not limited to a flying bird in the midnight but people who poke their nose into my business.

Boredom is a great disease, and to me, it is worse than an adventurous war. The stage of boredom that I have gotten to has made handicraft the only solution to this problem - strike. Four months have gone down the drain, and I'm beginning to think that hell abounds in luxury and peace in my community.

Shubby, the old people in my street who gather at the back of my grandma's house, which is two miles away from where we now live, talk about those girls who don't greet them with their native language disdainfully. It irritates me to hear the insulting things they say. Subola, I had to quickly rush home from my place of work to pick up some things that Mom left for me, and I greeted them in English.

They said I was disrespectful and that I had read too many books which have turned my head like those other girls. They said my mom allowed me to go to a more prestigious school, unlike their children, and that's why I had forgotten how to greet in our native language. They said that the young could not teach the old people tradition.

They said I speak English like one who has just woken up from sleep and like one who is suffering from catarrh. When their children speak English, they understand, so why didn't they understand what I had said? They said that I lifted my eyes in pride as if I had not attended the same secondary school as their children.

They said I now wear skimpy dresses, and I now have a boyfriend who buys me books and a new phone to call him. Subola, I have seen witchcraft and wizardry in a new dimension, and I tell you, young man, countries practice witchcraft on one another.
